AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+ speed screwy, temps high - Page 2

Maybe the software you're using to overclock it is bumping up the voltage to high levels to compensate for stability. Can you change multipliers in the BIOS? How about voltage? As I mentioned, not all boards recognize XP-M chips correctly, so it's important to have the ability to change settings in the BIOS (if the board doesn't allow it then you're out of luck). Remember the stock settings for that chip: 133x16 @ 1.55V. I'm guessing your old motherboard was able to correctly detect the CPU while this new one can't. As for temps., 45-65*C (load) is "normal" for those chips.

Mentioned earlier that the only thing I can change is the FSB...can't do anything w/ BIOS....the program keeps the voltages at 1.55 so that can't be it.

Yeah this thing will be in that upper range while IDLE not load...

I had a Sempron 2400+ Socket A and i had it at like 77 load temps and chip never died. I think there was a probelm with temp reading since socket A is old now.

Never trust software when dealing with overclocks. I remember older version of ntune used to dynamically change voltages. Still, the most likely cause is different sensors on the new board; they are either faulty or much more accurate (compared to his older board).

At the suggestion of Pioneerisloud, I'm cleaning off all of the compound and grease on the processor and I'll see if that helps...

Problem solved, it needed to be cleaned off and what not.

Big thanks to Pioneer, and thanks to everyone who tried to help.

Not a problem at all. Glad you got your problem sorted out . Its always nice to see your CPU running at a cooler temperature than you're used to, lol.

For future reference for ya (to the OP):
When in doubt on your CPU temps....reseat your HSF with a clean application of thermal grease with rubbing alcohol . If that doesn't cure it and you KNOW that its the proper amount of grease...you're good (usually with stock specs at least).
