I think personally keeping it on CPU for now is a sensible move.
I agree we aren't even using the CPU's power in games right now it is all about the GPU, why make it even more reliant on GPUs? It is wasteful and causes us to need more GPU processing power which is often a lot more expensive (nVidia i'm looking at you, a shrewd tactic indeed!)

ATi and Intel have both demoed Ray Tracing recently, and wouldn't that change the implementation of the physics API anyway, whichever API is being used? If AMD and Intel are both going to be springing that on the market soon then it's going to overturn the table and start an entirely new game.

It is just a mathematical simulation of real world physics properties. I don't see what there is to explain. (Noting i have programmed with the same principles before.)
