My TRUE was very warped!
I tried to use 320 grit emery but even that was slow work so I contacted a friend and he got me a machinists stone to rough it in. Then a light 320, 500, 800 1200 and a final 1500 grit to finish it.
It was so warped, some of the nickel plating is still visible along the edges.

Basic lapping
Mark the HS with a blue or black magic marker
Place a sheet of abrasive on a flat surface.
Slowly drag the HD across it the length of the abrasive and rotate it regularly to help assure even sanding.
Check the HS surface to see that most of the surface has no marker on it.
Remark and use a finer sheet of abrasive.
Move up to finer grits and remark between each sheet until you reach at least 800 grit.

Horizontal mounting is not as efficient IMO, tower coolers need good front-->rear airflow to really work well.
You mean swap it round? Could try that.

I do apologise, but I've had some right stress this afternoon. Now my 4GB of 1066 RAM is only reading at 333mhz, instead of 533mhz.

EDIT:

I'm not an idiot and it's installed just fine.
I understand you're stressed out that things aren't performing as you expect, but people are just trying to give some suggestions as to what's wrong. What's with the attitude?

Maybe it's just me, but "this cooler sucks. I installed it just fine I'm not an idiot. it sucks." isn't really going to get you anywhere.

Unless you've purposely underclocked your cpu or your ram, your your motherboard isn't detecting your components properly. Maybe it's giving you too much vcore. Yeah sure, you're at 2ghz, but maybe you're at 2ghz at 1.4v. What are you even using to measure temps?

Fair and duly noted. I based my comments only on what I saw in the tread. Just didn't seem right because the responses I saw where pretty helpful.

Lapping is: http://forum.overclock3d dot net/showthread.php?t=4735 (Odd, alerted the word filter, no spaces and dot = .)

Smoothing out the surface of your CPU and/or heatsink to make better contact to each other and in result, better cooling.

Right.

Well, lapping seems like hassle, to me. I may try that later. For now I'm going to give the paste time to settle in. 24 hours should do it.

I managed to get my RAM to work properly by overclocking the CPU (strange, I know) so I'm running at 3.49ghz and the RAM is doing 1049mhz (near as damn it)

The temp now is 39/40 with folding@home working away in the background, which seems decent. I'm going to OCCT it and see what happens. I reset the heatsink the other way round so now it's blowing out of the rear fan, not the top fan.

Thanks for all the replies and dealing with my stress

Then stop complaining and get another cooler. Obviously we're trying to help you out, and you keep on saying "this is rubbish" "it's still rubbish."
