9800GTX SLI Power Requirments?

Thread Starter
Hey I was just wondering do I have enough power to run two 9800GTX in SLI? I am currently using a OCZ 600W PSU and a 2.66 Quadcore Processor which I hope to overclock.

Thanks

A good 600W PSU with 30A+ should be fine for 9800GTX SLI. OCZ 600 PSU has 480w on 12v rails so it should be fine but as you push the quad higher, it puts PSU on the edge.

Single 9800GTX peaks at 110W and Q6700 around same so that's ~330W and we can give more than normal 50W for other components (power hog Nvidia chipset...) and say that it peaks around 400W.

Also case has PSU on bottom were it isn't stressed by heat of other components.

Ok, so we are at 400W stock. Overclocking a q6600 can up power consumption tremendously. A decent OC (3.2-3.6) can add another 50W or so depending on voltage. I've also seen some quads hit 200W. So even at a reasonable OC, he will be around 450W. Since almost all of that is the on 12V (a few watts for each stick of ram is on the 3.3V and a few watts for each HD on the 5V) he will be near the 480W max for the 12V. So he will be pushing it under theoretical max load. Now since a quad and gfx cards are almost never fully loaded at the same time, (most games don't use all 4 cores and most cpu intensive activities have nothing to do with 3d rendering) you could argue that he would be fine. As long as you are conservative with the quad OC, I'd say you are in the clear.
