[BBC] Google must divulge YouTube log

The log, which will be handed to Viacom, contains the log-in ID of users, the computer IP address (online identifier) and video file details...................When it initiated legal action in March 2007 the firm said it had identified about 160,000 unauthorised clips of its programmes on the website, which had been viewed more than 1.5 billion times.
First I've heard of this, so apologies if this is a repost.

You beat me to it by 2 minutes, but yeh, anyone that watched youtube is going to have at least some of their info tossed around.

Quote:
Google argued that revealing site logs – 12 terabytes in total and the sole source of information for video view counts – would constitute a massive breach of user privacy and place an undue burden on the company, who would need to vet the data for relevant information.
Thats just the logs.

So, I am assuming they are trying to hold google/youtube responsible for allowing compyrighted material to be hosted? I can see this really hurting them, but at the same time, how could they police it?

Think what needs to be answered is why do Viacom need the 'watchers' IP's?

Are they going to sue everyone who watched any unauthorised clip? Surely if they can prove the clip was there then they sue YouTube?

I would say so they have some proof of how many times it was "distibuted".

This is kind of disappointing, youtube is like a public service to the world to me. I've found some of the most inspiring videos on youtube and probably some of the most vulgar offending videos ever. Youtube is a way for people to express their opinions and their views.

On topic, I think if people post movies in clips or whatever else I guess that's a bad thing, maybe Google should implement a bot that searches for keywords that won't allow you to upload movies, songs, that sort of stuff. I could see it being difficult for Google but they will never stop getting bombarded with legal issues if they don't do something.

Yeah, agree that somethings should be done. But I think Google/YouTube have already implemented something along those lines.

Flipside is, all you would need to do is rename it to something 'innocent' and any 'illegal' material would be uploaded by the said bot.

Uh huh. Viacom should just go hunting for these videos.
The JASRAC does it - many Japanese anime and music videos are removed less than a day after they are uploading.

LOL. Perhaps you don't realize how censored youtube actually is? I'm sure you must know of at least one video that was there one minute, gone the next?

And no, I'm not talking about porn.
