Don't know what else to do need help please!

Hello everyone I have some concerns and questions about this little situation that keeps happening to me. I have comcast as my ISP and I have my computer conected to a router line 1 and from the router to my cable Internet box so you have an idea. The router is an old linksys 54G the thing is I'm not sure what's going on but when I log on to play a game online and my wife is using her labtop at the same time I get serious spikes on the games latency this had never happened before. Now I'm not sure if its the router or that my wife's labtop has "N" internal adapter and is screwing with the linksys router all I know is that its when I'm playing a game it quickly becomes a nightmare due to lag/latency issues.Should I just buy a new N router or is there anything that can help me with this situation.

Welcome to the notion of "Ports"

Example:
Starcraft uses TCP port 6112 and UDP port 6112 for battlenet and internet play.
You have to go into your router and either set up your Desktop as the DMZ host (which means the computer will be exposed directly to the internet) OR you can just open all the TCP and UDP ports you need in the windows firewall AND in the router.

Use google to find out which port your game uses. (ex: search UT3 Internet ports)

Let me know if that works.

On your routers setup page you should see an option about port forwarding. Thats the one you need. The thing is you need to have a static ip for it to work properly. That should be in the router setup too. Each time you turn your computer on it will give you a new local ip adress. The first 3 numbers are always the same, usually 192.168.1._, but the router will change the last number each time. You need to reserve a specific ip for your computer, something like 192.168.1.2, (192.168.1.1 would be your router but any number from 2-255 should work). Once you do that you setup port forwarding for the ports needed by WoW and input the static ip you gave to your computer. This should do the trick for ya I think.

Here is a link with specific instructions for different routers. Just find your router and it will explain it alot better than I can

Might I make a inexpensive suggestion. I picked up my router for very cheap, and it configures all these ports completely automatically for every game that I play. Like I said, this thing is very inexpensive, and I have yet to have one problem with it, except that the password to login and configure it was incorrectly given to me in the documentation that came with the router and I had to call tech support, lol...

other than that this thing works like a charm for everything I do, and I have two computers hooked into it...

Well, I was going to give you a link to the specific one I have on newegg, but apparently newegg doesn't carry it anymore.

If all else fails, there ARE inexpensive replacement options out there, and if you buy from newegg, or FRY's locally you can return it for whatever reason I believe, if you find out that it isn't the problem.

It's worth a shot!

personally i would go with upgrading your router. the old 54g wireless is workable, but you will notice better speeds on her laptop using wireless (use WPA2 keys instead of WEP and you will get anywhere between 150-300mbs through the air) as well as your wired pc. Almost all the new N routers make use of gigabit ports and the 680i has a gigabit NIC card.

I recommend the D-Link DIR-655. D-Link has been absolutely reliable for me at work and also for home use. Linksys is a good brand also.

Well i have updated my Router to the WRT310N and yes everything is running much faster i have yet to try playing the game yet so i am still un sure what affects it will have on the latency/lag on the game i will post more on this soon.

The only problems im having now is that my iphone no longer works now nor does my printers internal wireless adapter i have tryed everything but it seems that its to much security for the adapter i even had DELL's support guy call me back the following day becuase he didnt even know what to do lol. It only wants to work with WEP so i have to make a choice either i stick with faster speeds in WPA2 or go back to WEP and use my printer wirelessly either or i have to switch back and forth to both im guessing.
