How thick should thermal grease be?

Thread Starter
Okay I know this question is kinda ambiguous because of all the different types of thermal paste there are out there, but basically how thick should it be. I recently obtained a tube of thermal grease from radio shack (didn't want to really spend lunch money on thermal paste for an old PIII and got the radioshack thermal grease from a friend) and i noticed when i applied it it seems like some lotion. I was just curious to know if that is normal for like really cheap thermal grease.

Thanks,
Jinx

That will show you everything you need to know.

But, it should be very thin. A small rice grain sized amount for a single core in the middle, a thin vertical line for a dual, and a thin horizontal line for a quad.

He wasn't asking how to apply it.

No. It's fine. You should be touching it really though. Just put a tiny bit on the processor and mount your HSF. Consistency varies.

Just put a small dab on the processor. It is more of a thermal "film" than a "paste"

so basically its okay that the liquidity of the thermal grease is similar to lotion. All i gotta do is place a drop of thermal grease and place the heatsink over it?
