Linux has few viruses, and is more secure by default, it's a lot harder to make a virus for Linux, and when one is made, it'll get stopped a lot faster.

ClamAV is more about checking files to make sure there are no windows viruses in it so the poor sucker you pass it on to doesn't get owned.

But the OP needs one to satisfy his college's security policy. Besides it is useful if you do 'dodgy' things on Linux, just get an AV that scans for Windows virii and scan anything suspicious (i.e. Bitorrent DL's)

Open terminal and type -

Sudo clamtk
Enter your password. Click 'Update Signatures'.
