That judge and Viacom need to: settle down, change their tampons, and stop acting like Nazis over it.

I guarantee this case was brought forth in Britian just to avoid legal protections here in the US.

This sounds illegal under UK law more than US law to me.
Goes against EU privacy laws.
And the Data Protection Act.

UHHH..
Guys.
"U.S. District Court Judge Louis L. Stant" was the name of the Judge.
This was brought about in the US, don't blame us for this crap.

From wikipedia
Quote:
Louis L. Stanton (born 1927 in New York City) is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Stanton received a B.A. from Yale University in 1950, a J.D. from University of Virginia School of Law in 1955, and an LL.B from University of Virginia School of Law in 1955. He was nominated to the court by Ronald Reagan on June 12, 1985, to a seat vacated by Henry F. Werker, confirmed by the Senate on July 16, 1985, and received his commission on July 18, 1985. He assumed senior status on October 1, 1996.

As of July 2008 Stanton is involved in a case whereas Viacom is seeking compensation from Google over infringements of copyright by users of Google's Youtube service, of Viacom shows such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and SpongeBob SquarePants. He has ordered Google to provide Viacom with data about users of Youtube and has received criticism from the Electronic Frontier Foundation; an attorney for the pressure group has accused the court of "ignoring the protections of the federal Video Privacy Protection Act"[1][2]

He ignored privacy concerns, directing Google to give Viacom viewing log-in ID / names of YouTube users and Internet protocol (IP) addresses (online identifier) and video clip details (totalling more than 12 terabytes of data). The judgement was criticized by Google and privacy advocates who point out that the ruling ignores the protection of the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) which was created to prevent such personal information being released without the permission of the subject. Stanton claimed that because Youtube is not a "video tape service provider" as stated in the act, the law does not apply to them, however, close analysis of the act actually shows that the law applies to any distributor of audio visual material, in which case Stanton's ruling goes directly against this law. Simon Davies said that the privacy of millions of YouTube users was threatened: "The chickens have come home to roost for Google." Stranton however, denied Viacom's pleas "to get its hands on secret source code used in YouTube video searches as well as for Internet searches, and to order Google to provide access to the videos YouTube users store in private YouTube files."[3][4]

I thought they wanted to prove that YouTube users watch more of Viacom's copyrighted videos than amateur videos they upload themselves. If this were to be proved true, YouTube would get in a whole bunch of trouble because it would be seen as profiting mainly from copyright infringement.

if downloading a video is illegal as you say and if youtube has the video how are you going to get thta video on your computer to be watchable?

think carefully before you answer that.

Is that legal considering the IPs and data can be from non U.S based people? So shouldn't only U.S user logs be sent?
