LGA 771 Heatsinks

Thread Starter
With the retarded spacing between the dual processors (Motherboard: http://www.supermicro.com/products/m...00/X7DCA-L.cfm), finding a decent heatsink that can be oriented to blow towards the back of the case (the I/O ports) is a pain in the ass. Thermalright has their HR-01X that works with LGA 771 Xeons, but I'm wondering if you can rotate the heatsinks so that they're perpendicular to each other, and orient them in a triangular shaped config, where the 'base' of the triangle is parallel to the back. Here's a pic:

-Magenta arrows represent airflow (the two streams merge into one, flowing over the ram and NB to the rear exhaust)
-Red rectangles are the HR-01X's
-Blue rectangles are the fans

I've seen a config that *seems* like it would work, but the bad thing about the HR-01 is that there are thousands of 'holes that are punched upward, creating a series of flaps which prop up the layer above it. These holes also provide additional airflow paths through the heatsink.', and it's these flaps that would block the airflow seen in this setup from the fan side to the other side of the heatsink:

If that can't be done, then what are some other heatsink choices (tower please) that can be oriented so they blow horizontally not vertically?

EDIT: I just had a brain fart...top down coolers (like the Thermalright SI-128 SE with the Xeon bolt down kit) might work if I can reverse their orientations so that the end with the heatpipes are facing each other, because most of the top down coolers are biased towards one side or the socket. However, I don't know if this will be optimal/keep temps down, as it is interrupting the natural airflow of the case...(circular things are the heatpipes in both coolers)

One more question.....do server boards usually come with a heatsink back plate? If not, where can I find LGA771 backplates?

Thanks, Brendan (copied over from XS)

Is there enough room to get a slim fan in on the other side? you could run it as a push/pull. Those same flaps would help you then because they'd direct the air into the next cooler. One chip would run slightly hotter of course, but it may not matter.
