It is pretty costly for what it is (braided line), but not for what it can do.
You may be able to find something (or make your own) for less. Essentially the heat needs to be around 300F.
You could also use it in conjuction with something like This
. Again, costly... and again you could probably come up with something to use in lieu of that costly item. A ceramic or a fired-clay housing would probably do (?) [There is a link in the heating element link (2nd one) that shows a .pdf file on construction]
