Quadro is crap!!! Nvidia decieved me :( - Page 4

Quadro cards are incredible, absolutely astonishing, even for their seemingly high price, if you use them with applications that have specialized drivers such as 3DS Max.

So either you weren't specific enough when talking to Nvidia (not likely) or yes, they simply got you to spend more mullah. The person you talked to was probably like "CAD? I must recommend Quadro! Cha-ching!"

What software are you using?

Workstation cards such as the Quadro / FireGL lines are only worth investing in if your software needs full OpenGL hardware support, or if you are involved in mission critical stuff such as designing submarines where you cannot afford to have any down time due to hardware problems.

Autodesk who make AutoCAD, Inventor, 3DS Max to name but a few ditched support for OpenGL a couple of years ago, in favour of using DirectX (possibly prompted by the rumour that OpenGL support was going to be excluded from Vista, which it wasn't)

So if you use these products, happy happy! joy joy! Your gaming card will cut the mustard.

However many other application still rely on OpenGL as their primary display API - Catia, ProE, Solidworks, Maya (although I think Autodesk will fully convert it to DX soon) will all benefit from a Workstation card.

However a workstation card should still perform well under DirectX, if the performance is well below that of the equivalent consumer card then there is something wrong with either:
1) Driver setup - check if compatible with release of software you are using
2) Software setup - check to see if you have all the correct boxes ticked in the hardware setup dialogs

It is also worth pointing out that a lot of the cost of workstaion cards goes towards the support they offer with them, give Nvidia a bell and one of their engineers will likely help sort your problems out, this of course is not possible with a gaming card!

What drivers do you think would be best. I assume autocad for wireframe but i hardly ever use wireframe.
I have not used Rhino, so I wouldn't know what drivers would be best. The IT guy here won't let me change things up I wish I could use the latest drivers!

I was orrigionally going to put 1 Palit 8800gt 1gb superclocked for about $200 but after speaking to many nvidia representatives they assured me that Quadro was the way to go. The weapon of choice was the FX3700 512mb (g92 core i believe). They claimed about double the performance of the 8800gt and unprecidented realtime shadows and shader blah blah blah. Sooooo, after spending about $600 of my companies money on a GPU i figured i made the right decision. What i didnt know was they were going to buy 6 identical machines and have me train 5 others with the software and such. Come to find out this FX3700 (even with performance driver) performs no better, even worse than its less than $200 counterpart. In fact the 1GB superclocked 8800gt blew the quadro out of the water in opengl apps. I tested models in sketchup, rhino 4, 3ds max, autocad and some rendering programs. Im just a little ticked off that I wasted $3,600 of the companies money on overpriced hardware. what a sad day

The quadros aren't meant to be faster. You're paying extra money for software, drivers, support etc... not performance.

Quadro used to be o.k.

Now it's like pairing a bugatti Veyron up against an old mustang(that's broke)and frankly Nvidia wants to sell the mustang for like the same price as the Bugatti........

Forget about Nvidia.......they still owe me for the 8800GTX that was a flop...in expected performance

I don't have anything nice to say about a company that can honestly even try to sell something that's junk ......FOR MORE MONEY THAN WHATS BETTER like almost any ATI card.

But they ARE faster for CAD work. Like I said in an earlier post, they are tuned to use their power for vectors more than matrices, partially through the drivers, yes, but also through the BIOS.

Why do you think they all operate on a PCIE-x1 slot? They don't need all that bandwidth because they don't have to deal with the huge amount of texture data (matrices!) that games provide.

to bad you couldn't test drive an ATI card. If I am not mistaken they are better suited for OpenGL. That is not my medium so I couldn't say for sure.

Ah, they aren't meant to be faster than an equivalent desktop chip, simply tuned for workstation use. It's almost the same with Core 2 Quad and Xeon.
