Their low yeilds isn't a speculation, its a fact. You can fit more dies onto a single wafer using a 55nm process (ATI 4800) than with a 65nm process (nVidia GTX200), as well as end up with a greater "good chip to bad chip" ratio. So their low (~40%) yeilds will hold them back from going as low as ATI.

And even IF they were making $300 on every card, they still have to cover all the initial investments, not just the manufacturing costs. Research, advertising, PR, bribes to developers (you KNOW they do it), and a million other things. And if they can't do it by the time the next gen chips come out, they lose a lot of money.
