Thank you for your time.
All routers usually have a NAT firewall (network address translation) which basically hides the other computers ip's from being seen on the outside. Other brands of routers sometimes use a NAT/SPI(stateful packet inspection) firewall combination. SPI firewalls inspect the packets coming to the router to make sure they are legit. Thats a pretty basic definition of the firewalls in most consumer routers.

Modem--Router--IPCop Server--Router--Computer 1 2 3 ect.

Or is it too much..

Cr4zYH3aD, isn't that a little extreme?

Not looking for fault, but would like to have a clearer understanding of the reasoning.

...Isn't Modem > Router > PC 1/2/3 okay?

yes this is extreme ! I was wondering if this setup would be better for firewalls and protection ! But like I said, It might be way too much !

Instead of modem>router>PC 1/2/3, which means modem>hardware firewall>PC 1/2/3, it would be:

Modem--Hardware firewall--IPCop Server (hardware firewall)--Router(hardware firewall)--Computer 1 2 3 ect. ! lol

Thanks again for your time.

Usually just setting up IP tables, and using builtin software works great. There are some distro's that are only meant for a linux firewall. You can find them on www.distrowatch.org
