Nobody disputes this, but will today's quad core cpus be fast enough to even use by the time this happens?

No.

Well, they will be fast enough to use, but I'm fairly certain that by the time more than a handful of good games use four cores efficiently, my 3.6GHz X3350 quad will be getting the crap kicked out of it by a 75 dollar chip.

yeah it just so cool you can run stuff in the background with no lag or nothing

Edit which quad to buy ok the cheapy are Q6600 / Q9300 or if you wait for about 2 to 3 months you can get a Q8200 / Q9400.

best Quads to buy is Q9450 or Q6700 but if you wait the Q9550 is coming out.

If you want a budget but great oc'ing Duel go for the E7200 / E8400 or wait for the E5200 it will beable to achieve speed of over 4+ GHz with only 1333.3 FSB

i would have to disagree... with applications like intels threading building blocks and IPP becoming commonly available... if an engineer like me can script to use all four cores.... i believe that pretty soon (6-7 months) you will see games using quad cores to their max..... even now assasins creed, Grid, DMC4, lostplanet and all such games are using quad cores quite efficiently.... and honestly i can say that from being in India.... the life time of a chip in mainstream is about 2 years... so a q6600 still has around an year left....most offices out here still dont use a core2duo let alone a quad.... most gamers dont buy games... they pirate em.... something i disapprove of but really am quite helpless against....

You're saying that in 6 to 7 months the average new game will make use of 4 full cores? Since games take that long or longer, you're saying that developers are already creating games that will perform poorly on a majority of computers? I think you're pushing the timeline. It took years for developers to utilize 2 cores.

dude 4 months ago i parallelized the open-cv facedetection code on my own machine to multiply into hardware threads till thread management over head is just equal to the advantage you gain... i used intel tbb... also it had already been done using openmp.... this means 4 months ago i could do it... most ppl i sought help from were game developers and programmers.... i mean if a guy whos an year outta college can do it ... you can take it for granted that development studios arent far behind.... the time it takes to learn it is not the issue.... its the change of development policy that needs to come into effect... and im pretty sure... most of the big titles youll see come in the next 2 months even will be multi core friendly... you can test it out july 8th... DMC 4 hits shelves.... right now its my 8800 GT thats bottlenecking my CPU

QUADS own people just use Dual cores for benchmarks, and most of them are DUR, Quads are way better for anything Just most people don't care and screw thermselves lol.

Now myself i own 2 quads but i like beating on my dual core for 4ghz haha
post #50 of 68
The big deal with quads is yes, they're faster for all the multi-threaded operations that you might want to do, but here's the big question.

How often do you use the heavily multithreaded program, and is the time that operation take critically important?

If the answer is once a month, and it takes a couple of hours so I leave it on overnight anyway, then the quad is useless. A cheaper dual core that uses less power and runs games and single threaded apps quicker for the rest of the month is the better choice. Plus there's the fact that if you're leaving it on overnight anyway, who cares if it takes 2 hours or 4 - it'll still be done when you wake up.

I'm not saying quad's are useless, I'm just saying for most of us they are.
