Quiet graphics card

Thread Starter
Hi

I'm looking for either a silent or very quiet graphics card. I won't be doing alot of gaming but would like to play games on mid settings. The one I'm looking at, at the moment is the 'MSI 8600GT Silent edition 256MB'. This is passively cooled so should be silent but how does it perform? It costs about £50.

I have also found the 'Powercolor Radeon HD3850 512 MB' for about £60. I think this is a better card but is not passively cooled so could be quite loud. Is it worth the extra £10 for the 3850? Is there a cheap after market heat sink which I could put on the 3850 to make it silent?

The £10 more is definitely worth it for a HD 3850. The Accelero S1 is good cooler from what I hear. Though there are different revisions that are better than others not sure which one though.

How about the passivily cooled 9600GT from gigabyte? Great performance, id keep saving because buying any 8600 series card now is crazy while the 3850 doesnt represent great value either. Just my oppinion owning a 8600GTS (which is junk)

Just get a regular video card and slap an Accelero S1 Rev 2 on it.

define regular card? Buy the time you buy the cooler and the card you could almost afford the silent 9600GT which represent much better value and will last longer (until upgrade) and perform better Come on the 8600 series are total junk when looking at the market currently

I was referring to just buying the same class of card he's been looking at, but without a fanless/silent option. Just get a good card which isn't neccessarily quiet, and get an Accelero S1 for it.

Most "silent" cards are more expensive anyway, and the Accelero S1 is one of the top coolers at a very good price.

Instead of the 8600gt silent edition I might just get a cheeper card with the accelero s1 and then upgrade the card later on. Does the accelero work with every card though?

Yep. That's the one. It runs pretty nicely fanless if you have good airflow in your case. My Accelero is arriving today actually. Can't wait to test it!
