Just purchased a ASUS 4870 which replaced a Nvidia 8800GT 1gb. I have noticed a slight difference so far, here is what I got from 3dmark06:

14,442
2.0: 5922
3.0: 7189
cpu: 3452

That is with my E6850@3.9ghz and ram at 1044. GPU is at stock clocks, and mem freq. The only issue I have had with this gpu so far is the noise of the fan, I've used fan doctor to adjust, but can you say holy crap its loud, even compared to an 8800gt at 100% fan speed. I' may consider dumping it under water, any known waterblocks for this yet? Thanks.

EK makes a full cover, or you can just use the MCW60

+ rep I may look into these EK, though at a quick glance it seems there are 3 different versions. I'm guessing the copper one's are the best?

I know I can run EVE and CoD4 on two diff monitors and not show effects, even in CoD4 my fps was 55+. By itself CoD4 is 90+, though I had that with my 8800GT, though I need to crank up the AA and see if it effects it.

Like I said I have noticed a difference already, but I'm sure as drivers progress it will get better.

Though I must get rid of the noise, a full cover waterblock is a must...

yeah, just get the basic one. The nickel plated is for show, and the acetal top is pretty much the same thing. Just the basic top with the copper base is all you need

My video performance is for some reason lagging behind(in different spots than comparable systems too). I don't have aero on or anything, and don't run explorer as my shell, or have any other background processes running. I got a huge performance drop going from the hotfix drivers to the 8.7s though. I've un/reinstalled them, as well as reinstalled the OS with no apparent improvement.

Not a clue Matt, I'll put mine down to 3.6 and run it sometime soon. My computer is soon to be in pieces pretty soon though.

excuse the intrusion, but considering the results for example of
R@ZOR - 4870 - 13,733
i'd say something is wrong maybe it's wrong with me but
I got a score of 12080 (5120 SM2, 5709 SM3, 3002 CPU: http://forums.techpowerup.com/attach...7&d=1217287956) with e6750 at 3360 mhz with a hd 3870 at 958.50/1179
while R@ZOR has a score of 13733 with e6600 at 3600 mhz with a hd 4870 at 750/1040, aside from the fact that the 4870 smokes the 3870 out of the water at stock clock, on top of that another 240 mhz cpu and overclocked card, don't you think that only higher by 1600 points is kinda .... well, low, very low for such hardware I might add (and I also have water and same room temp of 35 C)

not to mention a CF score of only 16,522, maybe you could run a gpu-only tests and see the gpu results separate from the cpu to see where the problem is ?

from looking at the results around here, it would seem that the 4870 improves upon the 3870 by about 2000 SM2 points and about 4000 SM3 points at stock clock, that's a total of about 6000 points better than the 3870, which should be no less (excluding cpu tests) than 18,000 for the single and have no idea how mutch more for the crossfire (but higher) and that's for the gpu alone add gpu overclocked on top of that, then add another 240 for the cpu... should be well above the 20,000 for the crossfire, probably over 20,000 without crossfire also, but some others get only 4500 points higher, really strange

I get 17.5K with a single 4870 at 3.6GHz, 2 x 4870's I get about 21K this is of course with a quad. That's pretty much the standard.

you got: hd 4870 790/925

SM2: 6453
SM3: 7999

I got: hd 3870 958.50/1179
SM2: 5120
SM3: 5709

SM2: 1333
SM3: 2290
Total improvement for GPU only: 3623

only for video performance, that' very low I think, by comparison I expected the 4870 to get at least 8000 more points, we are not testing the cpu, there are no games (yet) that can hog a dual conroe at 3000 mhz (probably not even at 2000) so cpu is irrelevant, unless AMD (in which case 3000 and higher)

btw the 4870 at 850/1125 would get you a ~4000 graphics-only difference (about 400 more points, if you choose the voltmod+water way) and that too isn't much

and the GTX 280 @ 720Core / 1440 Shaders / 1300 VRAM:

SM2: 7495
SM3: 8214
Difference HD3870 SM2: 2375
Difference HD3870 SM3: 2505
Difference HD4870 (@790/925) SM2: 1042
Difference HD4870 (@790/925) SM3: 215
Difference HD4870 (@850/1125) SM2: 847
Difference HD4870 (@850/1125) SM3: 26

looks like the GTX 280 isn't as good as the money people would pay for it
