SM2: 1333
SM3: 2290
Total improvement for GPU only: 3623

only for video performance, that' very low I think, by comparison I expected the 4870 to get at least 8000 more points, we are not testing the cpu, there are no games (yet) that can hog a dual conroe at 3000 mhz (probably not even at 2000) so cpu is irrelevant, unless AMD (in which case 3000 and higher)

btw the 4870 at 850/1125 would get you a ~4000 graphics-only difference (about 400 more points, if you choose the voltmod+water way) and that too isn't much

and the GTX 280 @ 720Core / 1440 Shaders / 1300 VRAM:

SM2: 7495
SM3: 8214
Difference HD3870 SM2: 2375

Difference HD4870 (@850/1125) SM2: 847
Difference HD4870 (@850/1125) SM3: 26

looks like the GTX 280 isn't as good as the money people would pay for it
I think you presume that in the graphics test the CPU plays no role when in fact it does, especially in 3d06. I think you also underestimate how large of a difference 4000pts makes in 3D06. Take for instance, I have scored 15369 with an 8800GTX and 17.5K with a single 4870, though I get many more frames with the 4870. The difference that those points make is huge.

RPIJG there is a second part to this equation, you say the cpu plays a major role in 3d06, while I wouldn't claim it doesn't, I would claim it isn't major, I didn't assume, I know for sure, it's simple: as long as 3dmark does not make 100% cpu load during graphics tests (not cpu tests) the difference of cpu would have (almost) no effect, to make an effect it would have to be fully loaded (what is there to load ? it is only a graphics test it only sends data to videocard, nothing more), and if it's not, then how could it have major difference ? so the question is: is the cpu load from 3dmark06 during the video tests only is 100%, if yes, then you are right, then the question becomes how much, after all the command queue in the videocard is being inserted by the cpu, but at some point the gpu can no longer get any commands, so the speed becomes irrelevant, unless the cpu is unable to fill the videocard fast enough, which only happens if the cpu is extremely low speed (which is not the case with people who buy high end videocards).

just a while ago I was testing some performance with GRID 1.1, I set all my processes to affinity 0 and put just the GRID.exe to affinity 1, which resulted in 1 fps increase (from 60 increased to 61) at 1600x1200 compared to the alternative (all processes to all cpu's (mess)), so obviously at 1280x1024 the cpu would have a higher impact, the small impact in my case is because I am on intel dual core, on amd I suspect the difference would have been major (architecture), and then you would probably be right (also because amd is slower), but still the video card is the 99% of the equation, so I don't agree that the impact on gpu score is cpu dependent, not higher than 1%, which is not a problem for our measurements, sure on a P4 or athlon xp the situation might have been different and maybe even to an extent as high as 10%, and I suspect the reason for the increase of 1 fps is because of reduced latency when it comes to L2 access and also scheduler is no longer messing with the exe allows it to just run

as for the 4000 points, that I have no idea as to exactly how much that results in performance, but I tried to take things into proportion, unfortunately I would rather use plain facts as in compare a real situation vs another real situation like some game test or something, so I probably underestimated, have you measured the proportions ?

btw while I was cruising around I noticed that crossifre of 4870 sucks bad, major underutilization of both cards and then low framerates in all games (bioshock, fear, grid, crysis), single card is always at 100% usage of gpu in all these games and sometimes runs faster than the crossfire, maybe driver problems.

but the primary role of cpu in graphics is to keep the videocard filled with operations to perform, the rest is minor, unfortunately in real games there is more going on than just graphics, which causes a significant accuracy problem for videocard tests in regard to evaluating performance, also the reason that affinity increases performance, because in real game there is alote of calculations in CPU than in a graphics-only test, thus eliminations of migration and scheduler overhead causes increased game performance

I don't know what reviews you've read about CF 4870, but I've had nothing but gains. Not sure where what you are talking about has come from. My quad at 3GHz will take away about 6-10FPS on average from 3d06 graphics tests. That tells me that the CPU isn't able to keep up with feeding the GPU's. Now that obviously isn't across the board, as there are parts of those tests where the GPU is the one that is being bogged.

The fact is that you can't really exclude one from the other.

As far as proportions, I haven't gotten those, but it wouldn't be hard to peruse some of the many reviews out there and compare increase in 3d06 score and subsequent increase in FPS from many games.

I fear you're right, just looked at this:

the top guy has a 4850 and an intel
while the poor bottom guy has 4870 and an AMD, how sucks is that ?
overclocked or not it should have smoked it bad, but it didn't, it even sucked and bad, damn !
even my score was higher (12080) and I have a 3870, good thing I went for an intel
how could the 4850 score 400 more SM3 points when it has everything lower both vram and gpu clock.....
the SM2 score didn't change, as if they are the same card, and only 2x the vram bandwidth and 100 mhz core higher....

I don't have a picture, yet, but with my specs listed below I received an 11,488 on 3d06.
I'm fine with this score but I figure if I could o/c the E8300 I'd get a nice gain.
