My quad at 3GHz will take away about 6-10FPS on average from 3d06 graphics tests. That tells me that the CPU isn't able to keep up with feeding the GPU's. Now that obviously isn't across the board, as there are parts of those tests where the GPU is the one that is being bogged.
Exactly.

For instance, when testing the recent Xfire 4850 build I did for a client.. Using an X3320 @ 3ghz and gpu's set at 680/1050, the rig scored ~15.3k. With the cpu at 3.4ghz, it scored 18.8k, with the majority of the points increases being seen in the SM3.0 area, followed by SM2.0 and then CPU [obviously]. Although 3d 06 relies and scores the cpu.. just look at SM scores with cpu's set at different speeds, to judge the bottleneck affect on your gpu's.

the big question is to what extent that is true for real games ?

it will depend on the game. As I've said, where you might only see a 4000pt increase in 3d06, I've seen pretty big gains in games, especially in the ability to turn on and crank up the AA/AF.

I'm currently pursuing the last 63pts to put a notch into 17k for a single card and dual core. I don't really have time to break that plateau today though =o(.

Anyways e8500 + hd4850 = 16,937. So Far! I have yet, more wiggle room to go.

Look's like, my hd4850's are doing good in the crossfire department! no vmods done on this run though.

I easily see 22-23k in the future of these hd4850's =o)
