Question on Q6600 OC

Thread Starter
Just got my new system few days ago and been playing around with OC abit.

Just went up to FSB settings and did 1422 for FSB 1066 for RAM, also changed ram settings to 5-5-5-15 at 2.1v

Question i have - do i have to do anything with volts for cpu if it runs fine as is? its all on auto atm cept RAM and even that im not too sure that i need since it ran fine with RAM Volts on auto as well.

Memtest, Prime95, Super Pi, 3D Mark 06 all seem to run fine. Max temp i see is about 59C

System stats - ASUS P5N72-T, Q6600, Corsair 2x2G DDR2 1066, BFG 8800GT, Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Heatsink

looks fine to me, if you're stable after stress testing, theres no need to muck around with your vcore. although bumping it up might end you with a higher OC.

but watch out for the temp. 40c and 59c load seems pretty high for stock vcore and TRUE120 extreme.

Like he said, those temperatures seem high for a TRUE. Maybe you want to consider lapping.

what kind of temp should it be at? at stock 2.4 MHz i see 38C idle on coretemp and 33C idle on realtemp while room temp is about 30C

heatsink itself came prelapped, looks copper with pretty much mirror look

Think temp issues really come from room temp being bit high but not much i can do about that ><

This is one of ways i deal with it, open side panel and point this at MB

Get two Ultra Kaze and kiss high temps goodbye. You probably have inadequate case cooling, like wimpy 120mm fans in there.

Thermaltake A2018 120mm on actual heatsink and Ultra kaze on side of it about half inch away, both blowing at heatsink. there also big utility fan i link in previous reply thats blowing at middle of MB so i cant really blame the flow 8)

Arctic silver 5 maybe not apply perfectly im noob at that but with room temp being 90-95F at times i cant expect CPU to run cooler but i guess it can be abit closer.

You should see what my FX-57 is runing at lol - 57C atm but its at 100% load now decoding dvd into dvix, but that one has pretty small heatsink close to stock and thermal compound is messed up, i really should redo it sometime

So in general how many degrees above room temp should CPU be during idle? and how much should it rise on load about 10ish C?

well tried to redo thermal compound still get about same results, but back to original issue of volts all still on auto and latest thing ive tried was

calculating Pi to 32m, doing max heat with Prime95 and runing 4 instances of EverQuest game in windowed mode all moving around etc on highest settings - maxes out cpu at about 57C

different people have different standards/opinions in terms of a "safe" temp about their CPU. for Q6600, i'd say keep it under 60-65c during max load would be ideal
