SLI 9800GTX WITH A GTX 260 or 280

Thread Starter
Is this possible - I (stupidly) just bought a BFG Tech 9800gtx about a month ago - its a beast expecially on my 21" CRT I cant runs crysis on very high w/ 4x AA at 1024x768

My worry is that my parents will buy me a 27" or 30" flat screen and my computer 9800gtx is going to go hide under a rock b/c of the higher resolutions..

Ive read loads of stuff stating that 2 9800gtx's sli'd will do better then one gtx 280 - and of course do better then 1 gtx 260

Would it be possible to perhaps sli the 9800gtx that I have to a new 260 or 280??

Would I be better off just buying another 9800gtx since they are much cheaper... ?

And lastly - I have a Antec Earthwats 650 Watt PSU - It doesnt say its SLI capable .... Im guessing i will need a new one ... any recommendations?

No, you cannot SLi the 9800GTX with a GTX200 series. As for a 27" or 30" LCD, no video card ATM can run crysis maxed on those settings at the highest resolution. I am quite sure even 3 GTX280's cries and hides under a rock in crysis at that rez. IMO buy another 9800GTX when they go down in price AND if you need it. That or sell the 9800GTX and pick up a 4870 (best bang for buck ATM in my opinion).
Welcome to OCN!!! Don't forget to fill in your system specs in the control panel.

See if BFG has a step up type program for that card. They did run some for the 88XX when the 98XX came out.

Actually here it is.

You have me confused lol. Do you mean that Crysis can do that? Or that it can't?

you can't run crysis at 2650x1600 with a single graphics card in the present (at anything higher than a 50/50 low/medium)

you need to go CF-x or SLI to play it in high/very high at that res.

EDIT: 4870x2 could swing that but it's not really one card.......

Behold the GTX 280 in all their glory

Guru3D 280GTX Review SLI/Tri-SLI

(last page)

Would love to see the Leadtek Extreme in SLI.

On topic: 2 9800GTX's scale quite well in SLI and would give you a decent performance @ higher resolutions. Yes it'd probably be a good idea to upgrade your power supply, best to get one which will be future proof for the next 3 years. Something in the region of 850w would be more than enough, aslong as its not a budget one and has sufficent amps on the 12V rails 60~65A+.

I'd be worried too, if I can't game at a monitor's native resolution then it will look like crap when I scale it down. The native res of a 720 TV would look better than 1900x1200 scaled down on a 2560x1600 monitor in my opinion.
