Sorry to jack your thread here, and if you want I can make a new one.. but...

OK, so let's say I wasn't as smart as some of the other users here and used their crappy ASUS update windows program and it deleted the BIOS, but failed at making a new one... am I screwed? As it stands... the computer kinda powers up, fans, etc, and then dies, and repeats ad naseum until I kill the power.... Do I have to RMA now, or is there hope yet?

Thanks in advance,

~TkH

No problem.

From what I know on that matter, your motherboard is dead... You should send it to RMA ASAP to exchange for a new one.

Ahhh, crap.. that's what I suspected... was hopeful though.... Stupid long weekend, won't even begin to start the RMA process til Monday late morning. Sigh... oh well. How long does it take to get a new one back from them incidentally? Thanks again for the help!

~TkH

To get this back on track... what issues are you running into in trying to OC your setup?

Well, the time it takes to be exchanged really changes from store to store, some might do the day they get the faulty component while others might take a week or even longer.

The problem with my overclock is that I've seen in a few places that these CPUs can hit 3.0~3.2GHz with stock voltages. But I'm unable to even get to 3GHz with increased voltages.

These are all the settings I tried:
1.200 to 1.300vCore,
Auto to 1.40vNB,
Auto to 1.54vPLL, and
Auto to 1.4vTT

you may be ok, depending on whether or not the boot block was erased or not, sometimes you can recover it by pressing a certain key combination at boot up, you will need to research bios recovery for your board but you may be able to save yourself the hassle of an RMA if you can recover your bios.

What are you using for a FSB and multiplier? Sometimes certain motherboards have FSB walls and wont let you overclock at certain settings, try a 400 fsb with a 7 multi, keeping your voltage on auto and see if it boots, if it does try an 8 multi and so on and so forth, if you get nothing at 400 try 425 at 7 or transversly 375, im not sure what your settings are at for that but im sure you understand were im going with this. Good luck!

Hmm, forgot about that possibility... Now that you mention it, on some motherboards that can be done with a jumper setting.

I tried 375x4 (1500) and 400x4 (1600) both x8 multiplier, next time I'll loosen the RAM timings and try to lower the multiplier and crank up the FSB and the NB voltage if needed. Thanks for the tip

Hmm, crap, I just ripped the board out, and came on to see if there was anything special about removing thermal paste, or just use some alcohol... Goes to show that perhaps I need a little more patience, lol. Anyways, I did try resetting via jumpers to clear the on board RAM, but that didn't change much. Had no idea some boards had bios recovery via a key combo... for next time if I'm that unlucky.... Thanks for the advice though!!

Umm, not sure exactly what you mean here, although I did try their BIOS recovery thing (in case of an unstable boot, etc...) but.. well it never got far enough for me to really try it. It would literally power on, fans start up, drives start spinning, n then it would power off. Never got any video signal, etc... So I was pretty much at a loss. Anyways, I'm set on RMA'ing it now... but thanks for the advice anyways guys!

Good luck with your OCs, let us know what you manage to get stable at! Hopefully I'll be starting mine soon...
