I think it looks the same, the only difference is the PS3's did look a slight bit brighter.

I personally think they both look fine and neither looks better than the other. They're just different. Just like apples and oranges (which you can ALWAYS compare, by the way). They taste different, but I like both.
The brightness of the PS3 version eliminated some of the shadow detail, so clearly it can't be positive. The color pallet looks richer on the 360 version because it is not artificially brightened.

I'm with HugeDink. I fully concede that a Blu-Ray movie looks better than a DVD movie...I watch 1080i HDTV all the time, and I can obviously see the improvement over a 480p DVD. But it's not enough of a difference for me to want to buy a Blu-Ray player at their current price points. The leap in quality is simply not as dramatic as it was when we went from VHS to DVD. In a year or two, when decent players can be had for $150-$200, I'll probably buy in. But until then, DVD is quite good enough for me.

And mike, since when is a DVDs sound quality bad?
I don't think it is...DVDs have DTS and THX certified sound on them...

Bah... I dunno, you guys must all be audio/videophiles, with the 30" displays and 800kbps songs... even though they sound and look the same as 20" displays and 256kbps songs.
You apparently don't know how to listen or look for nuances. You must just take in the whole thing, which isn't a terrible thing. You're still getting the experience, so to speak. But if you think a 1,000+ kbps FLAC file sounds anything like a 256 kbps MP3, or that a 30" 2560 x 1600 display looks anything like a 1680 x 1050 display, then you just aren't looking or listening for details, at all.

I run a PC and a PS3 (and, formerly, an xbox 360) and I do not have a TV in the house; in fact, have not had a TV in the house for >10 years.

Why is a a HDCP compliant TV so important to the equation?

Gee I would love to play UT3, except that there aren't any decently populated servers out there
Wasted my money on that one....

You mean you wouldn't have bought UT3 if you couldn't rape the other people using a controller. Think about it, UT is possibly the biggest twitch based shooter ever made! The PS3 online play for this is going to be horrible because 1 person with a kb/mouse can and will dominate the entire server. Eventually everyone without a kb/mouse will quit and you'll have to wait 30 minutes just to get a game going. The 360 version will have a level playing field that will ensure everyone gets a chance to play.

Nope, the 360 has a more powerful card, in addition to a special chip that basically gives it free AA/AF. (And its ATI )

I've always found the PS3 games (and PS2 games for that matter) to look really washed out in comparison to 360 games. I know that you probably wouldn't notice it without a 360 beside you to look at, but when I put on my orange tinted ski-goggles the snow eventually looks white again, but that still doesn't mean it isn't orange

That's a pretty wild statement you've got going there. I don't deny that a mouse and keyboard are superior....but there are some people that are damn good with a controller. If that's all you're used to playing with, you're going to be good at it. That said, I think someone with a controller could be just as good as someone with a mouse. 360 and PS3 controllers are pretty sensitive after all. Can you use even use a good mouse with a variable DPI like a Copperhead on a PS3? I've never tried it...

As far as the video, the versions might as well be the same.

It's all a matter of opinion. I find the jump in quality to fully justify the price. I've got two large HDTVs and two PS3s for my bluray. I've got 7.1 surround in my living room. BluRay offers the best audio possible, which when you have an appropriate set up, simply kicks ass. DVD audio isn't bad, but compared to HD audio, it's just not as good. Same with the video itself. DVD9 can't hold a candle to bluray. But alas, it's all a matter of opinion. Some think it's worth the cost, others not so much.

It's not a $500 difference, because you'll still spend $350-$450 on the 360, so even if you get the cheaper 360 version it's only a $150 difference, which many people feel is worth it (and I do). But I personally bought my PS3 for the games. The 360 has only one exclusive that I care about: Gears of War. But the PS3 has Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, SOCOM, and Final Fantasy (although I don't care about FF). And then pretty much all the other games (that I care for) are on both. So the PS3 has a better game library for me, plus I refuse to pay a monthly fee for XBL to allow Microsoft to use my console that I already bought and my connection's bandwidth that I'm already paying my ISP for. True, it's not that expensive, but it's still money and I don't think it's worth it. And I haven't seen anything on it that is really all that much better than the PSN network. And once PS Home comes out, it may be better than XBL.

I, personally, don't think it eliminated any shadow detail. So clearly it can be positive, depending on your preference. And I still don't think the "color pallet looks richer" on the 360 one. The PS3 one looks like the environment has more light in it showing a brighter picture. That's it. No loss of image quality or detail that I can see, no altering of the colors, just looks like there is more light in the game's setting.

First off, lighting changes the appearance of colors. Second off, there is loss to shadow detail because the darks that would normally be there are not. It looks less like a shadow. And if none of those effects are enough for you, there is still the rather noticeable difference of the 360 version having snow and the PS3 one not.
