4870 not benching as well as my 8800 GTS - Page 2

Are you going to stay with SLI or go with CF? I would look in to this before I get another MB.

Well, I would like to switch the the 4870 if I could get performance out of it... and if my buddy could hook up a decent price on them, I would definitely consider getting 2 of them for CF.

I've read the Gigabyte X48-DQ6 is one of the best overclocking motherboards out there.

I'm not sure which leads you should check to test the PSU.

Sory for the late reply, but I just got my board a few weeks ago and had the same problem. I found that the manual that comes with the motherboard is wrong. In the pin section on the motherboard where you connect the front panel lights and power button and hdd light and what not, you need to switch the power button wire with the power light wire on the board. I had to re-pin the power connector to make it work, but it works. Hope this helps.

Interesting... but I didn't change my pin configuration, and it works fine most of the time, it just occasionally decides to give me issues like this.

In any event, I went out and bought an Asus P5Q-E mobo, and it worked like a charm.

I just talked to my buddy, who thinks of himself of a very knowledgeable computer guru, and he claims that the Radeon HD 4870 is a step down from my 8800GTS. Can anyone please confirm if this is supposedly correct?

considering 9800GTX is faster then 8800GTS and 4850 beats 9800GTX by a bit i don't see that being true. 4870 is at least 30% faster then 8800GTS and you friend is a nvida fan boy.

Edit: you have a GTS G80 which is slower then 3870... Question asked

Your friend is either behind the times or biased against ATI.

The HD4870 is a fair bit faster than a 8800Ultra.

Ok, so I've now been able to do some proper benching comparisons, and the 4870 is showing to be on top... but not by much.

I first tested the 8800 GTS with no OC settings. Crysis was averaging about 17 FPS, and I got a 3dMark06 score in the 9800 range.

I then OC'd the 8800 GTS to the values I mentioned before. Got about 19 FPS and a 3DMark06 score of 10300 range.

Then I did the same with the 4870. I got about 25 FPS on Crysis, and 10600 range on 36Mark06.

Previously, though, I had gotten 29 FPS average with Crysis, almost the same settings, and 18000 score on 3DMark06. When I switched mobo's, that obviously got rid of my CPU OC settings, so right now that is at stock, but I somehow wonder if my CPU OC settings really contributed to such higher scores. I really wished I could have done this test on my old mobo, but now I'm back to square one with my OC settings.

With all that said, I'm not all that impressed by the 4870, I feel it's barely performing better than my 8800 GTS (but at least now it IS better, whereas before I'm pretty sure it wasn't). I feel that I would have been better off just buying another 8800 GTS and running SLI.

Looks like I'll be spending a lot of time over the next week tweaking and benching.

Not cool.

Crysis is going to be the worst game to compare a ATI card to nvidia one if you are looking for positive points on the ATI.

Go run CoD4, World in Conflict, Bioshock or something similar.
