Not bad ..When I had my E6600 and the 8800GTS I was getting 10994 stock, Stock setting with the Q6600 stock were 12536, and with only the GPU overclocked 12963...

Can't wait to try out the 4870...Thanks

I get 27.115 fps on the Crysis Bench on high 3 runs with 4xAA , And thats on a 4850 with my cpu@ 2800Mhz. I think something is wrong if you cant beat that heartily with a 4870

Edit : thats with my native res of 1650x1080

Well, I'm running the custom "very high" settings, and at 8xAA. I did a quick bench before on just "high" and was in the 30's, if I remember correctly. Give me a few mins, and I'll do a new bench with your settings.

Update: Just finished.

Whew! I needed that. What an increase, I was finishing at 44 fps at the end of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th runs. I'm so used to going through the bench at around 25 fps, that it almost made me nautious with how much faster it was flying through the level.

With that said, man, those DX10 settings really make a huge performance hit.

I've read this entire post and I'm sorry for your troubles with your 680i board. I've had to RMA my Asus 750i board because of a memory DIMM problem. Nvidia based boards have been really crappy lately I've heard.

For your 4870, I'd let those catalyst drivers mature a little bit before getting rid of it. Also, you would be better off getting a Crossfire Intel supported board if you want to get another one.

you have a great card and I don't think you should compare this card to your old 8800GTS g80 because even I came from the same card but a 320mb version in SLI and I can tell you that my HD4850 > 8800GTS 320mb SLI in all my games I play. Not just that but I can finally game with 4x AA up to 8x AA without taking a big performance hit.

In the end once you're able to get your cpu oc back up again you can expect to see the true potential a HD4870 card has to offer in other games out there.

Actually, I have bought a new mobo with Crossfire support: an Asus P5Q-E. Worked without any hassle off the get go, and it seems to be more robust that the 680i LT. I'm fairly pleased with this purchase.

Thanks for the reassuring comments. I'm past the phase of buyers remorse now, and am looking forward to getting a stable CPU OC again, as you said, so I can see this baby in full action now.

Lol, I was waiting to do so until I was convinced I would keep my new components. I'm pretty sure I will be, so I have updated.

For those that are interested in knowing how I'm coming along, I managed to get my CPU OC'd to 3.45GHz again quite easily. I still have yet to test it for complete stability, but it ran OCCT for over 1 hour with no errors. I'll test it all day tomorrow while I'm at work, but I decided to go ahead and bench with those settings.

Crysis: 29.5 avg FPS!!!
3DMark06: 14239

Now I'm wondering if my memory was incorrect when I said earlier that I'm sure I got a 15000+ on 3dMark06 with my 8800 GTS. Maybe it was only 12000 or 13000+. Man I wish I had thought to backup that folder before formatting... I'm usually really good when it comes to backing stuff up before formatting, but admittedly I dropped the ball that time. Guess I was in too much of a rush to see the fresh results of my 4870.

that happens, with ati cards its better to reserve judgement till the drivers mature,i had been going over few older reviews and saw that my card is much better performing with the newer drivers.
have fun with your 4870.

I had this problem one time. No idea why, but after reinstalling the card and restarting the computer a few dozen times, the only thing that can fix it is reformatting the harddrive. Something messes with windows in my computers when I change video cards, not sure why...
