Preparations for switching mobo?

Thread Starter
Ok so last time I swapped out my motherboard I had to reinstall windows and format my hd thanks to no preparation on my part and my oem version of vista not having a repair option.

Is there anything I can do before I swtich my mobo that will make it so i do not have to reinstall windows afterwards?

OEM means 1 motherboard for life so you have to buy and install another copy. although many ppl do use the same copy on vairous mobos we can not discuss it here due to the legality of it

Really? Well actually I am putting it back on the mobo that the oem came with, as it is a much better overclocker.

...and on a side note there was plenty of discussion of doing it when everyone here told me that was what i needed to do when i switched mine and my pc kept crashing.

to say, because you changed boards you need to format and install windows on the new system (new system because of new board) isnt really to discuss legality, its a statement of fact. Its HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to format and reinstall windows after a motherboard chage.

As far as preparations, sure, find a place where you can back up your stuff, do so, then format. For a small degree of futureproofing you could make a partition on your drive, say 80/80 and this would allow you the benefit of not having 'preparations' in order to format. Also if you cannot prepare, due to an OS crash, at least its a simple format, instead of a complex recovery procedure, which regardless of ANY of the methods which exist, and how simple they are, its DEFINITLY not as simple as just shoving in a windows disc and erasing system partition.

I thought it was allowed to use an OEM on a new MB if its replacing a defective unit!

If you are swapping the board out with an identical one, there should be no need for a reinstall as its the same board. If you ahve addon cards, depending on if you connected them in the same slots or not, windows may or may not attempt to discover new hardware, also depends on bios some.
