Northbridge FAn clicking noise?

Thread Starter
I heard this while playing a game so i got down with a flashlight and there's nothing in the way of it that would cause the clicking noise. if i kinda play around with the fan it will stop for a second and then come back. The fan still runs fine at what seems to be the normal speed.

my guess is that it's close to going out on me?

if so what are some cheap fan/heatsink's that would fit it? it's a 939 Abit AN8 Nforce 4.

The Evercool VC-RE has been used as a replacement on a lot of DFI boards:

http://www.svc.com/vc-re.html

It would probably work on your board.

edit: It looks like the Thermaltake you have would probably fit as well. It's worth trying out as long as you already have it on hand.

ive never heard of fans making a clicking noise unless a wire gets jammed in there, are you certain its not your hdd?

Also, a good way to tell if its the fan is to put a finger on either side of the inner fan (not on the blades, but on the plastic circle the motor connects to) and gently try to rock the fan/blades from side to side. If it moves with little/no pressure, your fan bearings are starting to go and you should seek replacement. If it doesnt, then most likely your fan is OK and I would begin searching elsewhere for a culrpit.

The ball bearings in the fan could be going, they tend to rattle a lot or click before failure. I'd get it replaced.

On my old Dell machine in the past, the fan to the heat sink started clicking. It drove me crazy. First I backed out the screws of the fan to the heat sink while it was running. Guess what, that fixed the clicking noise.

From what I figured, over time the fan impeller becomes soft due to the constant heat running though it trying to dissipate the thermal load in the heat sink. Giving it a little space vs. being clamped down tight solved the problem. But, it can cause a rattle. SO ... I put a simple flat washer on all four of the screws mounting between the fan and the heat sink. No more noise problems.
