Incorrect. Read my previous post. You can rewrite the MBR without re-partitioning.

I actually used to boot from a Win98 disk when I had an issue like this. It'd allow me to boot into a DOS prompt, and from there I'd run fdisk /MBR, and all was fine (and this was on an XP system )

Bootable floppy or CD. There were some suggestions about a 'live' CD, and those might just work. noobdown's link is your best bet. Download an image of one of the boot CD's, and download fdisk from somewhere (google it...)

Okay. I have the puppy linux. It allows me to run command prompts. Is that what you mean by DOS?

EDIT: Only FDISK I found I need to install inside the OS....

Before you run out and start reformatting and such....

Enter your Dell BIOS set-up (F2 I believe)

Select DRIVES...

Select SATA OPERATION

On the right panel...Change RAID AUTO/AHCI to RAID/ATA and press enter

ESC and Save/Exit

Restarts the computer...

Try this out before you do anything drastic

fdisk /fixmbr is the best way for things like this, as Chozart stated. Unfortunately the only way I know how to do it is to use the repair console on the windows cd, and it doesn't read the drive.

I did however find this: clicky

Well there is a few more options, as stated by Chozart, I think its the mbr as I had a similar issue. I ended up using the harddrive makers disks utilities and low leveling the disk. Then loaded xp using cd just fine. Even if you delete the partition using gparted, it doesnt fix the mbr.
