Partitioning Help

Thread Starter
I just bought another samsung 500gb HD, so now I have a total of 2. This is my first time trying to partition drives, and I'm not too sure if this setup is correct. I'm trying to get Games/Data on one drive while I have the other drive keep applications/OS.

The Games and Data partitions(held on disk 0) show up as "(Primary Partition)"s, is this correct? If not, how do I change it? And, a dynamic disk is the same as a raid configuration right? I'm not sure if I want to raid or not.

Under Disk 1 I have my "C:" partition which is stated as "(System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)". Is this partition part of the MBR disk, since it has System and Boot?

Is there a better way to partition my current setup? Would it be wiser to make one of my drives a backup instead? If so, how do I convert it into a backup drive?

This is a good explanation of the difference between basic and dynamic disks. As Duke said, his guide is probably the best I've read. What parts don't you understand? You should be able to integrate in your new disk without any problems. Your Disk 0 can show up as a primary - Windows allows 4, I believe.

If you want to make a backup, you can use Clonezilla to make your backup without having to take up your whole hard drive or RAID 1 the new one.

This is fine.

Not exactly. A dynamic disk CAN be a RAID setup, but it's not always a RAID setup. See here for more info on dynamic disks.

Yes, the MBR will be on that drive. (Technically I believe there's one MBR per drive, but the one with the boot info is that first one). Note that the MBR is on the disk ahead of the first partition, not actually a partition itself.

If you're more worried about hosing your windows installation, I'd leave it as is. If you're more worried about data loss, I'd either set the drives up in RAID 1 (backup your important data somewhere else before you attempt this) or use an automated/manual backup process to backup your data to the 500gb.

Thanks everyone. I have one more question. On one of my drives I have 2 partitions(Games and Data), but both are considered "Primary Partitions". Is this ok?

Yes. You can have up to 4 primary partitions on a drive.
