German computer site Heise says Intel's Justin Rattner shared some interesting information about the Larrabee project at the Supercomputing conference in Dresden.

The reporter heard Intel's Larrabee will likely debut with 32 cores next year and one of the surprises is that these cores are based on architecture of the nearly 14-year old Pentium P54C - but with lots of modifications of course. The Larrabee cores will be made on a 45nm process, they'll have a 512-bit SIMD unit and Rattner confirmed the chips will support 64-bit.

Heise claims 32 Larrabee cores clocked at 2GHz could offer up to two teraFLOPS of computing power, that's twice as much as the latest video cards from AMD and NVIDIA offer today. However, the site also points out Larrabee may have a TDP of 300W, that's 64W more than the TDP of the GeForce GTX 280

How are they going to cool the thing...phase change? That's gonna cost a lot if they did.
Air cooling would have to be ridiculously large/loud

It's funny because pcwatch reported 32 in-order x86 cores more than a year ago. They were ahead of the inq, fud and everyone with Nehalem information as well.

I swear, that site is gold, just the diagrams tell so much info. I just wish I could read Japanese.

If the cores are the same Pentium cores as the ones the C2Ds are based on, then this thing is basically a native 32 core chip? R700 will have over 2TFlops and once it is migrated to 45/40nm, it might have around the same TDP...

I wonder what they actually mean by "based on." The technology is all evolutionary, so a simple core for a multi-core CPU would definitely look a lot like CPU architecture that's just plain old. The i586 architecture was superscaler and supported MMX (early SIMD that evolved into SSE). The only major technologies missing are out of order execution and branch prediction, neither of which really make sense for a simple core as part of a 32-core CPU. Those functions would likely occur outside of the small cores, which would just be fed execution streams.

That's all speculation on my part, of course.

how do you the oldies would react? We use 32 cpus of your time and thats only on the videocard

300 tdp, 45nm, it fits in with its time table. But will it be a winner?

Won't the power of the RV700 almost match that?
On top of that, there's several months for them to break that barrier, with Nvidia promising to smash that.

Intel could be too late.

But interesting..
