My First Attempt at a Gaming Rig

Thread Starter
Well, I'm not exactly that knowledgeable about all the parts, and I'm just trying to see what you guys think about this rig.

My main area where I'm really stuck is Dual Core vs Quad Core. I currently am running one of the first CoreDuo's from 2006 that were used on the iMacs and I have not had problems, so honestly a bump in speed is okay by me. The thing is I'm afraid to waste money on a dual core and in a while duals will be yesterdays news with the quad cores coming out now.

Main games I play:
rFactor (race sim)
COD4
Crysis
and a few others once my rig is built.

Here's what I was thinking about for a build tell me what you think:

CPU:Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115048

Motherboard:BIOSTAR TPower I45 LGA 775 Intel P45
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138118

Ram: OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
*Unsure if this will work with my Motherboard*
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227298

VGA:VisionTek 900244 Radeon HD 4870
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814129113

PSU:OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI 700W ATX12V Power Supply 100 - 240 V
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341002

Case:Rosewill Conqueror WBK Triple 120mm Fans
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147104

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218

Please rate and give any suggestions. Mainly if I would have any problems with my motherboard/cpu/ram. But your critique is appreciated.

**Note I will most likely overclock once I get things running.

I would get a E8400. There is no real need to spend an extra $40 or $50 for just a couple of megahertz.

Other than that, I would look at a different power supply. Those OCZ units do very poorly at peak loads, and can have power ripples (so I've heard).
Look at this unit, as it will also provide plenty of headroom for upgrades:

Edit: And I would get different RAM. I don't like OCZ (personal thing).

not a bad bit of build, but i'd:

save the money and go for the the E8400, its got plenty of overclocking potential,
i'd also look at the MSI P45 board, i believe that's going for around 90 after mail in rebate.

All in all though, very nice

Yeah I know, but their not quality units.

Besides, the Corsair unit is cheaper, and more powerful.

i would suggest the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233003

which is said to be on par in performance with TRUE, and only a few dollars dearer than the AC freezer 7 pro
