Bass can vary greatly between different headphones.
Here are some options:
- BeyerDynamic DT770 Pro 80. I'm a little hesitant to recommend this pair because it is extremely bassy, and without a headphone amp the 770's low spectrum can be muddy and really uncontrolled. However, it is still a very good entry pair and works well with the genres you're interested in. This is a closed, over-the-ear headphone.
- Grado SR80/125/225. I list these three together because they are in the same lineup but increase in price (and scale accordingly). SR225's can be found in the $150 range over @ www.head-fi.org
in the sale section (used condition). The bass in Grado is more of the controlled, tight variation that I hinted to earlier. This brand is often regarded as the quintessential headphone for rock music. Expect high energy, a forward presentation (meaning that you feel like the band is right in front of you), and sparkling treble. Grado does not need an amp to sound as it should at stock configuration. These are open, on-the-ear headphones.
- AKG K271S. This pair has been discontinued, but I believe www.ttvj.com
still carries it (look on ebay as well, you'll find a better deal no doubt). An underrated headphone that really seems to do well with most genres in general. Bass isn't particularly impressive in quantity, instead underlying. This pair would do very well with more mellow music, such as jazz. Again though, this is just solid all-around and I doubt you'd feel dissatisfied with it for alternative, etc. This is a closed, around-the-ear headphone.
- Sennheiser HD595/HD580. Both of these will be ~ $150 if purchased used. I recommend the 595's because they really do not require an amp and should perform decently with most genres. The HD580 is far superior but requires an amp to really shine. Sennheiser is generally noted for classical and jazz music, but the 580 is very competent with all varieties of rock. Both pairs are open and rest on-the-ear.
What would I pick? Probably the K271S or SR225.Edited by Aura - 7/5/08 at 9:08pm
