Cheap way for cool air?

Thread Starter
I was bored and came up with an idea that could potentially go somewhere. (correct me if this has been proposed somewhere)

It consists of a case filled with cold water, ice cubes could even be used if you wish to keep it simple and cheap. Inside would be a long stretch of coiled tubing (something thin and must allow transfer of heat quickly, copper perhaps) about 1/2" to 1" in diameter approximately 10'-15' in length attached to either end of the box with fans at either end to allow for airflow through the tubes from the room to the inside of your PC.

Any Ideas on how effective this could possibly be if the water was close to freezing?

Fans would'nt suffice unless you used a straight tube design, for all the bends in there you would need some sort of vacuum suction to force air through there efficiently.

Not sure if this would be a safe idea. There may be an issue with condensation getting on your hardware. Also the effort to keep the water/ice at such low temps would probably end up being overwhelming. You'd probably be better off setting up a watercooling setup.

If you're going to use water, why not go water cooling? This is what people will be thinking. Aside from that, using water to cool air is rather hard to pull off effectively and without problems, so an AC is much simpler.

Why does everyone hear the word "cool" and suddenly think "condensation"?

Think about it for a second....does condensation ruin your TV when you turn the AC on in summer? Didn't think so.

Actually they are right...an AC cools the whole room, while what he is thinking about will cool only the PC, thus a big gap in temps bewtween the PC and room, thus condensation.

The condensation would happen in the icebox, not the computer. You don't have condensation in your car when you turn on the A/C, it all drips outside. The computer would actually dry the air as it heats it up (think "relative humidity"). If he manages to get the inside of the computer case below room temperature, there would be condensation on the outside of the case, not the inside (just like the condensation on the outside of your toilet tank).

oh nevermind i was thinking of water cooling i suppose the fans might cool the water as well but the idea seems like it would take up alot of space and not be worth it for maybe 2 degree drop you could get a dehumidifier with the coil thatcondensates the water and mount a fan by the coil

Theoretically that could work. It would be better to use a straight tube to get the most air through. You would have to keep the water really cold to keep the air nice and cool and to me it seems like a big hassle to do this constantly but you might be able to keep some nice temps for short periods of time. Set it up with super cold water for a benchmark run or something like that.
