PSU for 4870

Thread Starter
I just purchased a new 4870, but I was wondering if my currrent PSU would be fine for this beast. It has 28amps on the 12v+, and only one PCI-E 6 pin connector (the other would need to be connected using an adapter). Should this be sufficient?

Stats for PSU:

+5v 34A
+3.3v 28A
-12v 0.8A
+12v 28A
-5v 0.8A
+5vsb 2.5A

I would go with a new one. The Corsair 520w would work great. I've never trusted those pci-e power adapters.

That's the plan, but I'm looking at a short term use, say a couple of weeks. I just blew the money on the new video card. =P

The Raidmaxes that come with cases are not very good PSUs. Even though it says it can provide 28A, I have my doubts. It would be a good idea to start budgeting for a new PSU. Something with ~35A or more on the 12V rail. Any of the Corsairs (vx450, vx550, hx520 modular) are a good choice and cheap here: http://www.buy.com/retail/usersearch...me&display=col. I can look around for more options if you wanted.

edit: You would still need the adapter for the vx450 but it would handle the load just fine.

if its 500watt+ then it should do but your cutting it close. Its a good thing you got a dual core, but then again your ocing it. So 550ish is enough if you want some breather room.

No. It is not worth risking your new shiny 4870.

Indeed, I remember seeing a review for the 4870 on Guru3d that suggested at least 32A on the 12V rail. You could get a good psu that supplies that for around $100 if not a whole lot less depending on where you shop.

Don't risk it, man. Just think about what kind of cruddy power is going to be put to your other components while that 4870 is sucking up all the power. Find a nice PCP&C 610W, Seasonic 650, Corsair 620, or Silverstone 650 so you can focus on gaming and not troubleshooting!
