Gtx 260 Vs. 9800gtx Sli - Page 3

I am soon going to geta 24" monitor for 1920 * 1200 and will be changing my graphics cards.

Can't decided between SLI GTX280's or SLI GTX260's.

I know both will be good enough but should I go the full wack with 2 GTX280's?

I probably will.

I can get two ASUS ones for £640 and still have my 9800's to sell

Cheaper than stepping up

Considering the fact that the prices of the new GTX260 and GTX280 have come down somewhat since their original release they both make good alternatives to those considering something along the lines of 8800, or 9800 SLi. Although those who already own an 8800 or 9800 card would see more performance gain for their money if they just add a second card.

I'm currently debateing whether to sell my 8800GT cards and replace them with a single GTX280 now hat the prices aren't so rediculous. The GTX280 can be found for about £330 with VAT in he UK now compared to the 9800GX2 at roughly £350. Much better than it's release price of around £450 to £500.

Considering the 8800GT SLI is faster than the GTX280, then I would imagine that 9800GTX SLI is even better. But why not go with 8800GT SLI or 8800GTS SLI for a lot less money. 8800GTS==9800GTX!

I would get a GTX 260 because if you can SLI it you achieve great performance It will out perform a 9800GTX. The 9800GTX is only slightly faster than a 8800GTS 512. get a 260GTX there is no game apart Cyrsis that you cannot run at high res with one GTX260

Thread Starter
See the thing is though, I'm looking into purchasing a 24 inch (1920 x 1200) so I need a card that can handle most of my games (including crysis)

On high settings with some AA.. (Not crysis of course.. Crysis can stay at all high with 2x AA.)

So would it be better to swap out my mobo with a cheaper one that not only OC's better, purchase a Q9400 proc (I need Quad core to Future proof) and get a 260?

Or should I get a 24inch LCD and just get a 260?

How well can I expect to run COD4 at 1920 x 1200 with a single 260GTX?

Thanks for all the help so far.. I might even consider going ATI/AMD this round.. I hear their improving alot. The problem Is I don't want to get stuck with a bad card if new games are going to need alot more power.

So what do you guys think I should do? Screen and graphics card, or full system upgrade.

Mind you, I have 800 bucks to spend this summer.. so I have to choose wisely. I want a new case.. I hate my cosmos.. keep that in mind if making a config for me.

The way I see it is SLI and CF are for enthusiasts who are okay with having an increased performance but at a worse price/performance ratio. IMO no one needs SLI who does not game at VERY HIGH resolutions.

One exception may be if you happen to have an SLI of CF board and already had a GPU for some time and want a performance gain without having your current card being obsolete. In this case, it would be financially smarter to purchase a second GPU in the future when prices drop from the original GPU.

Another exception is SLI or CFing a card that has the "sweet spot" in price/performance, such as a 9600GT.

Given your choices, I would go with a GTX 260.

Hey Guys,

Same kind of dilema here, I have SLi mobo and twin 7600GT's, I play at 1680 x 1050 max rez, but want to play all my games with full settings applied .E.G CoD4, plus CoD5 and Hells Highway when they come out.

I've been told or should I say suggested to me to get twin 8800Gt's and a bigger PSU and CPU (AMD X2 6400+), but I still think a single GTX260 now would be the way to go and another GTX260 in six months or so.

However, I've read a lot on here about SLi causing problems by not being smoothe but giving very high FPS.

Confused !!!
