Serious Help Needed, RAID w/Rampage Formula

Thread Starter
lo all,

My mate has been having some serious issues getting his RAID working on an Asus Rampage formula x48.

He has a sata DVD drive plugged in sata port 6 and 2x barracudas plugged into sata ports 1 & 2.

I have ran him through the bios and configured it correctly, we have created the array and it says normal but when set to raid the setup process wont launch from boot from CD, its as though it isnt seeing the drive, any ideas? the setup up works perfectly if it isnt in raid... has anyone else had experience with this, how did you get raid installed? He is trying to install Vista, would it be better if he tried installing xp first or would that have the same issues?

Thanks

For Vista, you just set up the RAID and install, there's no other disc you need to configure for RAID.

HOWEVER: One small problem with Vista, it doesn't always have the correct driver for the RAID. You should have a disc that came with the board, put it in computer and look for the ICH9R Make Disc for RAID for which ever OS you're using. Put it on a flash drive, plug it in and choose the firmware.

Hope that helps!

Lo mate, thanks for replying....

I have a fair knowledge of RAID having used it for quite some time, i have it on vista now and on XP before, I did some research and from what i gather the ICH9R driver is in the VISTA OS, the problem i am having is we cant even get it to that point, once RAID is switched on in the BIOS and the ARRAY is created his DVD drive just drops off the map, we can see it in the BIOS but it fails to boot when inserting the CD and again when trying "press any key to run cd", he can bash his keyboard stupid and nothing happens. My gut feeling says its because his DVD drive is sata, I dont know why but i cant get past the fact that maybe the mobo cant differenciate between the HDD's and the DVD drive. A possible bug with the bios maybe? i am pretty sure that when you select RAID it turns on all 6 ports disabling the DVD drive, thats what i was thinking anyway.....?

I was wondering through the usual fool proof method of power of elimination whether XP might have better results but i aint to sure if it would make any difference, i need to somehow get the PC to recognise the RAID and the DVD before i install, i was thinking maybe install on one HDD and attempt it from inside the OS?

Any Thoughts anyone can add to this? His specs are below:

Intel Q6600
Asus Rampage Formula x48
2 x 250gb Barracuda 32Mb Cache
2 x 2Gb Corsair DDR2 1000 Dominator
XFX 9800GX2
OCZ 750w (diamond i think????)
Samsung Black DVD RW (sata)

Thanks Again

**edit**

Isnt it just the worst thing when your the only person who your mates know who knows anything about computers lol Built repaired, updated... Wish i enjoyed something less demanding like stamp collecting lmao

Go into the BIOS and check whether it comes up in the boot order.

Is there an option in bios to select the cd drive as sata?

The Bios shows cd-rom as primary boot device RAID as second.

It tells him to insert bootable media not recognising VISTA OS? even though when it isnt in RAID it runs fine??? cursed bios lol

It doesn't exist anymore. Does Boot From CD ever come up on your screen?

Is it USB or PS/2? If it's PS/2 you should be fine, some USB keyboards won't work during POST. What BIOS version are you using?

Tried USB and PS/2, the bios is the original which came with the motherboard, he isnt realy to clever on pcs i dont want him attempting anything to technical because he WILL break it... trust me lol

the pc works pwerfectly when not on RAID its just when RAID is activated
