Laptop screen randomly going black

Hey everyone, wasn't sure if this should go in notebook or monitors/displays, so somebody please move it if it's in the wrong section.

Anyhow, my sister has been having a problem with the laptop that was provided to her by the place she is interning at (their IT guy is on vacation, so I'm the substitute for now) The screen has randomly gone black several times now while the system is running. The power and HDD lights are still active when this happens so the system is still on, but the only way to restore the picture on the screen is to manually turn off the system and start it back up. I am not sure what is causing this, as it is not making a BSOD beforehand and is not registering any errors in Dr. Watson or the system event logs. Any suggestions? not really sure if this is a driver issue, a hardware issue, or something else entirely. Thanks in advance for any help

I think the driver might be a good place to start. After that, perhaps something is overheating causing a shutdown.

Yeah I thought there may be a driver problem too but everything checks out OK in the device manager, no indication of a driver problem. I don't think it's overheating though because the system is not shutting down, it's just the screen going black while the power and HDD lights remain on, but the only way to get the screen back is to restart the system.
