[NH]NVIDIA has something to beat Radeon HD 4870X2 - Page 6

And it'll probably cost around $1K for it. Sure it'll beat a HD4870X2, but it'll be a moot point by then. If a HD4870X2 can be had for $500, I don't see many people buying a theoretical 280 GX2, only the die-hard deep-pocketed few will end up with iti. Nvidia may keep the performance crown, but they've definitely lost the market share this time around.

Looking at two 4870's in crossfire
http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon...-performance/5
Pulling 128 fps @ 1920x1200 while the GTX280 is pulling 62 fps, wouldn't it take a little more than just a GX2 280 to pull ahead of a 4870x2? Since we've been hearing reports of 15% improvement over the 4870's in crossfire...(147.2 theoretical fps) I doubt a GX2 280 will pull ahead.

edit: and I just used COD4 @ 1920x1200, because that is my favorite game at the moment.

Nvidia needs to pull off a big awkward stunt to compete against the 4870x2, and it is going to be difficult for them to land on their feet.

I like how everyone is always on about the GTX 280 being some power hungry, heat generating monster. Meanwhile the 4870 is nipping at the 280's heels in power consumption and pootin' in the 280's face when it comes to heat generation. The 4870 eats electricity and craps heat, just like the 280.... except the 280 is faster. And thats with the ATI being 55nm versus the Nvidias 65nm, once the 280 goes to 55nm I'm sure the 4870 will be the new king of heat creation and electricity gobblin'...... Oh wait, the 4870X2 will be

no power play has not been fixed with the 8.6 drivers the 8.7 will fix it

and the 4870x2 will have power consumption like the GTX280

How exactly is that supposed to happen? A single 4870 is pretty close to the 280 in power consumption (and more at idle), two of them will put it well past the 280.
