Need a new Sound Card

Thread Starter
I have a Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1. Seems time to upgrade. Music takes up about 40% of everything I listen to (all lossless quality), Movies takes up about 35% (as high quality as whatever I download them at, which will change when I start ripping myself), and games 25%. What card is the best for me? A Creative X-Fi with the mods that I've heard about? A Prelude?

Of what I've heard [ppl saying] recently, AuzenTech Auzen X-Fi Prelude is the best card. But if you were on a budget then consider ASUS Xonar DX 7.1.

If you can do the mods, I'd go for a modded x-fi, otherwise a Prelude. The X-Fi cards will give you the best of both worlds, although if you don't play a lot of EAX games (BF2 has the most noticeable use of EAX 5) I'd go for something like the Xonar or another Auzentech card. The Xonar also has the added benefit of pseudo-EAX 5 support (it basically catches the EAX-specific calls and mimics the appropriate effect).

Well, I wouldn't mind doing some mods. Which Creative X-Fi should I get?

Oh, I should add that this will mostly be used for headphones, but when I get enough money for some decent speakers, and when I fugure out how to set them up behind me without being on the floor, I might change to 5.1/7.1.

Just go with the XtremeMusic. I believe only the Elite model has the better DAC on it and it's not worth the price premium IMO (at that price, I'd rather get the Prelude). You should be able to find an XtremeMusic for $50 or less.

I'd also consider WHICH mods you want to do. If you're going to be doing the mods to bring it up to the quality of the Prelude and it's going to cost you the same, you should obviously save yourself the work and go for the Prelude. I'm not sure what the mods will cost you to be honest...a lot of the people in the original mod thread on head-fi got some free parts.

How's the DAC in the Titanium (wow that name is long) compared to the one in the XtremeMusic? Compared to the Prelude?

I'm pretty sure it uses the same DAC as the XtremeMusic (CS4832 DAC). The Prelude has a better DAC (KM AK4396VF DAC) than the XtremeMusic. Whether you'll be able to tell the difference though, I'm not sure. It's hard to do ABX blind testing with sound cards without actually having them all with you at the same time.

Bah. I'll just go with the Prelude. Seems like less of a hassel for better quality. The Prelude is good for Dolby Headphone, right? At least 50% of the time I'll be using headphones, and wan't it to sound spectacular. Untill I get some other upgrades (like that 30" you were helping me with), I'm stuck with 4.0 speakers, which aren't even uniform, and thus headphones > speakers for me at the moment.
