[gMP3] Top 10 MP3 Players (SQ ONLY) - Page 8

Question here for you guys that have MP3 players, and hopefully use them in your mobile audio systems as that is primarily where mine will be used. I can't tell you how fed up I am with a few MP3's on a CDR because my top of the line H/U isn't a dvd player. Thinking in the realm of 8+GB should suite me for a while BUT,

how strong is the headphone (preout in my case) in terms of voltage at full volume and how well do they keep the distortion levels under control at aprox full volumes?

You should be able to get pretty close to standard 1.228v line level with most any player (however, I don't know of any manufacturer that publishes output specs like that). The worry-free solution? Just grab a player like a iPod or Zen that has readily available line-level outputs.

I was thinking more along the lines on how a car audio H/U is rated to deliver 2V (weak sauce) 4V, and 8V directly to the amps via pre outs and having to gain match the two together. Too much and the signal will clip, too little and the signal isn't strong enough. As for hook ups I was thinking just building a 1/8 stereo to RCA cable and going into the AI-NET input. I guess i'm jsut not sure if gain matching will be that big of a prolbme here or not in terms of where the MP# layer is going to start diving into massive distortion and possibly clipping the input to the h/u.

I'm from the train of thought that it's silly to spend a lot of money on an MP3 player if you don't travel a lot...and I don't. I don't want a large one for when I'm working out.....so smaller/cheaper ones are better for me.
Are you kidding me? you need to a powerful source or AMP to drive them

Why don't you try Walkman? Head-fi users recommended it

quick question guys: Do the Sony/iRiver devices require that you convert your MP3's to their proprietary format (much like the iPod+iTunes b.s.)? Or can you simply play them as natural .mp3's?

Ipods don't require you to convert formats. You have to use Itunes but it can be a regular MP3 file.

I prefer to use FLAC or OGG since its open source but it's unsupported on the ipod.

Nah, what's that?? Will it play FLAC without draining the battery too hard?

Were you using the same headphones in your test? Most earbuds are generally crap and can't really output anything below 100hz... or even 250hz for that matter. Everything in your signal chain will make a difference.

With today's technology, we really are splitting hairs here. When comparing the highest quality with the highest quality, even us audio heads tend to lean towards brands we know and like.

I agree. Sound quality IS very subjective. Only a real-time analyzer (RTA) can tell us if our ears are receiving all frequencies at equal decibel levels, but that doesn't mean it's going to be pleasing to the ear, our ears or someone else's ears.
