P5N-E SLI vista x64 blue screen on first boot of day

Thread Starter
Hi folks,

I'm hoping you can help with this one.

My PC is a new build, running Vista x64. On the first boot of the day, about 1 minute after the machine has fully booted up it then blue screens. On reboot, the PC is then fine and runs great until switched off till the next day, when the same thing happens again.

This happens almost without fail.

I've re-installed the OS several times but it hasn't cured it.

The CPU has a mild overclock from 2.4 to 2.6ghz.

My Bios is 0703.

I'm thinking it's time to flash the BIOS and give that a try, but I'd really like your thoughts on this one?

Thanks for any help or advice.

Chinster.

Check RAM is properly supported in the motherboard manual. (4x1 setup may not be supported at the same speeds as 2x2 is).

If that is fine, try putting the voltage up one notch in the bios, may be CPU not getting enough at some points.

I personally would only flash the bios as a last resort, i had to RMA my motherboard a few months back because of a bad flash .

Avoid flashing Basic Input Output System (BIOS) unless your BIOS doesn't notices your CPU. The BIOS you are running is completely fine. If it has become corrupted perform a CMOS battery removal to reset the BIOS. You will have to remove the little battery near the GPU slot and wait about 3 to 5 mins.

If this fails try different RAM P5N-E SLI doesn't like 4 x 1GB high end RAM. P5N-E SLI et your RAM volt at auto which mean 1.8v you may need to change it to 1.9 or 2.0v.

If this fails try upping your Vcore on your CPU

It could be an issue with the amount of ram you have. Do you have SP 1 installed? The below patch fixes the issue, and has been rolled up into SP1:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft
For those running into the problem of BSOD when trying to run more then 3Gb of ram on Vista, you need to run the KB929777 hotfix from microsoft. This hotfix applies to Vista, both 32 bit and 64 bit, so download the corresponding update.

Thanks for the input chaps, nearly all of you suspect it's a ram issue.

I have 4GB Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X4096-6400, these are in 2 x 2gb sticks in alternate slots. The PC has a mild overclock done by the folks who built the system (Q6600 OC'd from 2.4 - 2.6).

I'm wondering if I should just try resetting the BIOS to all defaults and see if that helps?

I do have SP1 installed and have the problem both with and without windows updates applied.

I reset the bios to defaults (I didn't do the overclock) and the machine did not blue screen on reboot.

I guess it will take a day or two to see if that really has fixed it.

boot to Linux Live CD or Barts PE and see if you get any issues then if not i suspect driver issue. Also did you boot to safe mode? Just to throw out OS issue!! Also switch to single channel mode rather than DUAL channel see if that works too!!!

you should check the thread for that board and get your quad clocked to 3ghz m8, you will need to change your bios back to 0608 tho it that is the 1 to have for quads on that board.

First things first, I'll give it a day or two to see if it's stable at the default BIOS settings before I do anything ruinious

Do you recall what the message was on the blue screen? That's the best way to pin point what the exact problem is or rather was if it turns out that you are completely stable.
