[TH] Exclusive: 'Nehalem' at 2.9GHz and X58 - Page 4

And the ram limits are fine. Most major processor improvements brought about recommendations of 4x the previous generation (486 was 8mb, P1 was 32mb, P2 was 128mb, etc). The recommendation will probably end up being 8gb soon with 16gb considered high-end (give it a year or so after nehalem's release). And keep in mind that this is the first time Intel puts more than 4 slots of RAM on regular desktop motherboards since the 386, so that automatically increases the limit more than needed.
I believe the Nehalem's memory controller supports tri-channel RAM. That means 3 DIMM kits will be the norm in the future.
Once again...

It is a totally new macroarchitecture, dubbed Core 3. It is based on Core 2, but not the same.

So with an on-die memory controller, does that mean the northbridge is no longer needed on mobos?

No, it just isn't quite as important. Well, in theory. Intel is going to make it worthwhile to you to get the X58 (think $$ premium) because it is the only chipset that can overclock Nehalem.

Thank you for mentioning this. Sometimes people forget that there are more than just gamers interested in perfromance. My 4G setup is not neearly enough for the 3d modeling/architecture/product design feild. With rendering programs and animation there will NEVER be enough resources. 8 cores and 32GB ram is the ultimate system to use now but soon it may be 16 cores and 64GB ram. In fact i think this feild alone is soley responsible for the vast improvement of CPU's and graphics. Thats just my opinion. Gamers are great but i doubt Intel creates new CPU's to please the gaming comunity.
Edit: Maybe intel did release the Extreme series for gamers but that is still a small fraction of the market.

It's true though, you can't name a single game that needs or even benefits from Skulltrail, but those two sockets filled with a couple of quad core CPUs are excellent for those who need the power and for some reason don't want a Tyan or a Supermicro (or just want to have their cake and eat it too, productivity and overclocking ).

to bad their upgrade left the LGA 775 socket type this means a whole new mother board will need to be gotten bless it
