Intel Noobie!!!! (Q9450)

Thread Starter
hey guys!

I just stepped into the INTEL family here.. so lets get my basket of muffins!! (im still waiting for the basket from my amd brothers).

ok well i just got a cpu cause of a deal at Fry's.

I got a

Q9450
GF7050VT-M
2GB of ram.

all for $~304 (303.50 something..)

i think its a nice deal since the q9450 sells for $325 on newegg.

Well the temp. of it kinda sux.
its idling at around 49-50, under load is going 50+
and i checked the RealTemp and the highest temp hit was 62.

my old opty was between 33-48... so this is a little scary for me.

I have two fans on the case, but the motherboard only has one SYS FAN... so one of my fans is standby.

I'm looking to get a new mobo, and a cooling fan. (as im plannin to OC).

but so far with q9450, 2gb ram, and 8800GTS, i hit 13k on 3dmark06.

Anyway give me my basket of muffins and some brownies, and lets let the recommendations begin!!!

Idle temp 50c? Is this at stock speed with stock HS? May need to reseat the HS or get a better cooler.

When the HS doesn't have a good contact with chip, lack of thermal grease or distract airflow etc, the idle temp is usually high. In this case, you need to take it out and try to tight it up or reapply thermal grease etc.
I get the same temps with my TRUE with Coretemp on idle.. I did a 3DM6 run, CPU was 50c on coretemp. Restarted pc asap, and temps in bios was 30.
none can get this temps normaly.

What's your budget? If you plan SLI, 750i or 780i is the way to go. For cooler, OCZ Vendetta 2, Tuniq or XIGMATEK etc is fine.

i plan on AIR Oc'ing..
maybe to between 2.8 - 3.0

I dont really wanna push my cpu too far.
and later on I do plan on SLI'ing. but only 2 video cards.

Do you think a 750i will do the job ?

and im thinking a OCZ Vendetta 2, since i have a OCZ PSU.. lol

or should i save up some cash and buy the 780i ?
once again I do not wanna push my cpu to suicide runs/watercooling/etc.

just oc'a lil to better performance and on a aftermarket cooler for better temps.

You can OC that proc to 3.0ghz no problem, just get a better cooler and put up ur FSB too 375.

With a nice air cooler 3.0-3.4 GHz is very possible.
