Any Compelling Reason for Vista???

Thread Starter
I am about to upgrade my PC for AMD to an Intel mobo and Quad processor. System is mostly got gaming. Since I have to do a complete Windows re-install anyway, it would be a good time to upgrade from XP to Vista as well.

Other than DirectX 10, is there a compelling reason to upgrade to Vista? That by itself just deosn't seem to justify the effort and cost.

Thanks for your opinions.

i use both os's and i prefer vista over xp
the driver support is equal but when formating vista has new drivers and also you do not need to use a floppy for the most part to set up raids.

also Aero

Also cost is only a problem is you want to pay for it.

There is no "Essential" reason to get it, just a ton of "nice features" reasons.

Better security with x64 Vista

Picks up devices easier

Networking is a bit easier

Control panel and users documents stuff has been made more intuitive

Drivers operate at a different level, so BSOD's from drivers failing is reduced.

A bit more responsive for a lot of things

Personally I will never go back, but that depends on preference.

FYI if you are going to buy it, look on Ebay, and just get the 64 bit version ($80 vs $130 for the 32 and 64 bit combo pack).

Well, I wouldn't say DX10 is a compelling reason to go with Vista in the first place, LOL. In my experience, while it takes a while to get used to when coming from another OS (makes sense), Vista is actually faster at pretty much everything--program startup, installation, etc--it's not a bad OS at all. I still prefer XP, and that's what I still use for my everyday use--but tbh, Vista isn't bad, and I'd have no problems using it over another OS at the moment.

EDIT--trueg50 pointed out an important feature of Vista--things, while they look different from, say, XP, are quite intuitive. Moreso than in XP in some situations (but also, it'll take a small bit of adjusting from the previous OS).

the support for vista x64 is far better than xp x64. I will not go back to xp either, but that is a personal preference.

Now I'm thinking about a reformat and going with Vista x-64. I have a free copy from work (bennies of being an IT guy) and have been toying with the idea for some time. It is just SUCH a PAIN to reformat, especially since it's been like 2 or 3 years since the last one.
