Does your computer turn on? Does it stay on? It probably worked.

Benchmark it! Benching will help you identify if the temps are out of range but will also make artifacting noticeable (a sure sign that overclocking failed). There is of course the complete failure to run the benchmark, which also is telltale of the overclock not working.

A quick and easy benchmark (albeit not terribly taxing on newer hardware) is aquamark if you can find it. The other options are the 3dmark downloads.

Anyone more familiar with nVidia testing? Does the control panel include a self test (like ATi's CCC overdrive panel?)

what are you OCing? Try ATItool. It is a great tool for overclocking your GPU and testing to see if its stable. I actually used the automatic overclock for clock speed and memory speed and got a very stable OC on my 8800gt. ATItool is great for testing your overclock with its spinning fuzzy thing. http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/

After you install the app, click on the scan for artifacts and watch the temps. Also watch the window and see if any tiny yellow dots appear. Usually that means you have either overclocked too much OR you need to go a little higher. A good rule of thumb is google what everyone else is doing. That will give you a good ideal of what your GPU is capable of. Honestly, i dont know how far you can push the 8500gt, if that is what you are OCing.

artifacts start to become visible if you overclocked it too much it can also cause ur cpu to crash thus giving you a cue that ur OCing has failed! i dunno ahahahah

hmm go in 5 mhz steps, once u see some artifacts then u no that u have gone to far with the memory, if its locking up then its the gpu thats two high. i usually overclock the gpu first, find the max, lower it to stock, overclock the memory, find the max, then lower it to stock, then put them both at max and run benmarks. a great tool is the pcuser ut3 demo lite, it shows you how many frames u get and when u watch it it should be able to show u artefacts. good luck
