What is the best mp3 player out there?

Thread Starter
Ok I recently lost my mp3 player and my headphones (still very upset about it) and I am in the middle of finding replacements. I'm already gonna spend around 150 for headphones, so I figured I might as well go all out on the player as well, although I might be purchasing it in a few months. Anyway I want the BEST sound quality; that is what I'm most interested in. I would like it to have a custom equalizer, and please no one tell me to buy an Ipod or a Zune (have had both and am sick of all the proprietary garbage that is involved with both).
I've heard that Sony's have great sound... what else should I look for and what models/brands should I be looking at as well?

Thanks for the help!

It's a shame you've given up on iPods. Good luck in your search.

I have found my old archos Gmini 220 has great sound quality and a custom equaliser. However, this was 4 years ago and I havn't needed to replace it, so I have no idea what Archos are like now .
I'm sure there are probably better out there, how much do you want to spend?

... The ONLY reason I would resort to an ipod would be the ipod touch. I still drool thinking about being able to access wifi with a full web browser on something I can throw in my pocket...

The touch is what I have. It's what I was thinking about suggesting until you shot down iPods. I love it, and wouldnt trade it in for anything.

I am willing to spend like 300 for one, but I'd rather it not get that high. If I can get something cheaper with less space, I'd be willing to do that too i.e. getting a 20 gig version rather than an 80 gig version or whatever.

EDIT

the thing I'm interested in most is sound quality. I am not interested in a pretty interface and all the other nice features at this point, I'm just talking about sound quality.

if you do get a sony product you are going to have to deal with their crappy software. There is no alternatives (that I'm aware of) to sonicstage.

I loved the Samsung P2, greatest sound out of it with lots of options for a custom eq.

Much better then my iPod.
