Yeah that's the thing that's keeping me away from Sony. Also don't they have their own proprietary crappy codec... like atrac3 or something like that?

Much better then my iPod.

Not done a whole lot of research on it yet, but is there a proprietary software/media player you have to use with the p2? it's looking pretty nice so far... especially for the price. And does anyone have anything to say about it's sound quality?

BTW I am really into giving rep to people who help me... I know I sure find it nice for people to rep me when I try to help them out, so I do my best to rep people who take time to help me

Yeah I've heard that the older ipods can run rockbox... what about winamp? I don't have very much experience dealing with rockbox, but that may be a good option. I do love winamp however. Also, would the build quality of the player have much to do with the sound quality it delivers? Like at a noticeable level? Like would an ipod for example sound better than maybe a 10 dollar 128 MB sandisc mp3 player just because of the materials it's made out of and such? Because if it doesn't make a difference, then I might just go out and buy some cheapie sandisc mp3 player for a while and run rockbox/winamp off of it untill I can afford a more user friendly player.

Cowon is your best option, I'd say. Next to a creative zen, the output is pretty. or you could always go with an ipod, use a line out dock and bypass the stock amp. seeing as you hate ipod, the cowon/creative is definitely my choice.

Rockbox is a pain in the butt, because its battery life/usage of battery is horrible for open source software, let alone the constant rebuilds of your music library.

Yes, the internal components make a difference, yes an ipod will outperfom a 10$ sandisk player, simply due to the components and hardware. [amps/board, so forth]

ZUNE!!!!! i swear to you, its the best mp3 i have ever owned. i have the 30gb, which is the older model, but works fine. Microsoft's zune team does an awesome job updating and listening to what should be added into the zune to make it better and what fixes should be addressed. the Zune is also crackable for 3rd party games and software, which Microsoft doesn't condone.

here is food for thought ipod vs zune:

I was looking at the cowon and it is looking pretty nice too... and thanks for the headsup on rockbox. Yeah the cowon so far is the one I have my eyes on, but it will still be a while before I get my funds up and I also still have plenty of research to do

Any more suggestions/reinforcement would be great!

Have you considered any Japanese/Chinese players?

I personally own 2 and although they aren't an iPod by any stretch, they both do their jobs very well!

My most recent purchase was a Onda VX747, which is an 8GB PMP that has touch screen. The UI is customizable and there are already a bunch of people that have posted their own designs. I will admit that this player didn't meet my satisfaction at first, but with a firmware upgrade, I am very satisfied with it & best off, it was less than $120 shipped.

Check out MP4 Nation ... If you want strictly an mp3 player, the S:Flo model is the one to check out.

I have no affiliation with the site & it wouldn't benefit me one way or another. I just had a very positive experience & the response by the owner of the site to inquiries I sent really impressed me.

By the way, there's a bunch of youtube video reviews of many of the different players.

Thanks but I own a zune, and I really don't like it. In fact I used it so much that it got a beating in my pocket one day and the screen cracked lol I bought it in spite of Apple... and to me it was just as controlling as the ipod; the media player especially.
