You'll have to forgive me, as networking, and anything really internet related is the weakpoint in my IT knowledge.

Yeah, I've tried that, but wasn't too thrilled with it. Thought I'd explore other options.
For DynDns to work you have to make an account, setup your router to use DynDns, and give the information time to populate through the web (read: up to 3 days). Now the 2nd part of this install is you have to setup port forwarding on your router to forward all RDP connection requests to your PC, and you have to enable RDP on your PC.

Alright. I will do all these things and check back in a couple days. Thanks for all the help.

On a further note, DynDNS is not actually REQUIRED to run RDP. If you know the IP address for your router (you can get it from the router) and you already have the port forwarding and RDP protocol setup on your computer, you can connect by simply using the IP.

To me, personally, everything is wrong with it. If VPN is secure enough to pass CC information across, then it's more than secure enough for any data a user needs to send, and if security isn't a problem, RDP works brilliantly. Both are easy to setup and use, so why on earth would i use over inflated software to do something that was easy to start with....

Kinda like installing Microsoft Word so that you can type Joe Bob: 555-555-9999 into it.... why didn't you just use notepad.....

what is a vpn i know what the acronym means but is it easy to setup a Remote connection thru it? I have plenty of times where I get people and Im like ok press the start button and i get a "wheres the start button". Being able to go in and do it myself would be schweet but I never had any luck with the remote desktop when I had xp pro and now i have vista home so thats not happening.

In my experience, a (free) VPN server is a pain to get working right on windows. RDP is "check a box, open a port".

What you're really looking for is Remote Assistance. VPN and RDP both have to be configured on the PC before they can be used. MOST people (read: they bought a pre-fab PC) already have remote assistance installed on their computer, and if you can talk them through getting you their IP address, you can send a request to establish a session. if they click ok, you're now remoted in.

The M$ write-up on using it isn't too bad.
