Who cares. Do you own AMD or NVIDIA stock? Are you an employee of either company? Are you the CEO of either company?
If you answered NO to all 3 of these questions, then stop acting like a teenager.
Buy the card that best suits you, whether that may be the ATI offering or the NVIDIA offering.
What ATI did was create competition. That is good.
Anyone remember the 8800 Ultra? Talk about getting bent over a barrel. The consumer suffered because there was nothing out there close its performance that was produced by ATI.
Unfortunately this thread has gotten far off topic and has become an e-peen waving contest.
I'm seriosuly considering buying some nvidia stock while it's cheap =D

Except that you're wrong and your analogy is totally off. the HD4870 has a good run in some games and DX10.1 (plus the 24X custom AA) are much better on the HD4870. Most benchmarks show the 280GTX marginally beating the 4870, and sometimes even losing out to it, when AA is enabled.
Anyway, my point is simply that if I had $500 to blow on a graphics card, I wouldn't stand there like an idiot going "hmm, but this one is cheaper and only performs a little worse" I'd just buy the best I can afford, and if I can afford thebest, why on earth would I go lower? Just because a ****load of AMD fanboys are screaming blue hell about the lower card? No thanks. Best I can afford.
For the record, right now the best I could afford would be the HD4870 and if I was looking to buy right now that's what I'd get. But I'm also expecting to come into some money in a few months time. Enough money to buy Tri SLI 280GTX's and a 26" 1080p monitor. I would not think twice about buying such a set-up, either.
