No one is saying the 280GTX is worse than the 4870 in performance, but 95% of consumers wont be buying it because its so much more expensive than the 4870 for a performance boost that isnt even close to worth 300 extra dollars. I have no idea where you are reading "which performs better." EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT WHY NVIDIA HAS TO DROP THEIR PRICES, NOT WHICH IS BETTER.
Clearly you're the one who needs those after school English lessons. It's mentioned a few times in the last few pages. I'm not wasting time getting quotes, but it's mentioned. Go read.

And yeah, I mentioned in my first post. Cheers ATI for forcing Nvidia to water down their prices. I still blame the idiots that buy these cards brand new, though, for the inflated prices. If people will pay for it, they'll happily take it.

Obviously it loses at CoH, but the majority of the time it is faster with 8xAA.

And I guess there's also this

Perhaps in terms of market share, but not in terms of performance. Nvidia have been on top, performance wise, for a long time (7 months is almost a millenia in technology terms).
Please... transistor for transistor (XD), ATI is faster. If they did what NVIDIA did and just stuck a ton of them without using a small process (e.g. reached the 576 mm^2 die size that NVIDIA has), they would have better performance - the 4870 would be faster than the GTX 280.

But that would throw their affordability out the window.

Damn, those results are pretty varied. I'd like to blame drivers, but that'd be old hat.

Crysis results?

ATI cards are massively dependent on drivers. For example my FPS in GoW doubled (no really, i'm serious) going from 8.4 to 8.5. I'd give them 2 or 3 releases before making a final verdict on performance, but it is only going to go up.

For whatever reason, those 4 games are all they tested with 8xAA, and most other sites will only go up to 4xAA.

It's common knowledge that ATI's cards handle AA much better than Nvida, though. I'd hazard that 0xAA results may have been different.

I'm sure it would be different. But if you're playing with either of the HD4800s or GTX200s, you're probably going to have at least 4xAA on.

Edit: Anand test Assassin's Creed and BioShock without AA:
